Great Buildings - "Dream That Never Dies" (1981)

After the demise of The Quick, bandmembers Danny Wilde and Ian Ainsworth teamed up with Richard Sandford and Phil Solem to form the band Great Buildings. A marvelous album released in 1981 on Columbia Records called "Apart From The Crowd" was the result. This album has been a staple of our radio broadcast for almost three decades and it is a shame that the album has never been released in the digital age. No compact disc release and no digital download release. A crying shame...

There was no second album but Danny Wilde went on to record three albums of his own and with Phil Solem, released a fantastic set of musical gems as that powerhouse group, The Rembrandts.

Fellow MOGger Dermahrk also shares our love for the musical output of these guys. Check out his posts:

The Rembrandts, new masters - the duo comes together for the 1st time – in Great Buildings

The Rembrandts, new masters - it all began in '76 with The Quick

The Rembrandts, new masters - Big Hit #2 - the theme song from "Friends"

The Rembrandts, new masters : Big Hit #1 (Power Pop wonders #8a)

The Rembrandts, new masters - Danny Wilde goes solo (kind of)

The Rembrandts, new masters - Danny Wilde solo '88-'89

The Rembrandts, new masters: their first CD hits the streets, and my ears!

The Rembrandts, new masters - – their second album “Untitled” – 1992

The Rembrandts, new masters – their third album “L.P.” – 1995

The Rembrandts, new masters - cover "Money" - done by the Miracles and 255 others!

Here now, for your listening pleasure, is "Dream That Never Dies" from Great Buildings.

We've been spinning this song on the radio for the past year and a half and it's so cool to see that it's getting used on a television series.

***Update on Saturday April 26th, 2008***

Ashtar Command (with Rachael Yamagata) - "Blister Of The Spotlight" (2006)

Our radio website got slammed with over a thousand emails and hits the past two days due to search engine frenzy about "Blister Of The Spotlight" from Ashtar Command. It was played on "Ugly Betty" last Thursday evening during a scene with Betty on the street at night as the fireworks went off in the distance. This was not the song heard at the very end of the show. This was about fifteen minutes before the show was over. People from around the country have been trying to find this song and somehow Google and Yahoo! along with several other search engines brought them to us. Wow. The power of the internet.

The song was first released on an album from Chris Holmes back in 2006. This is the version that we've been playing on the radio for over a year and a half. The album is called "Get Yer Yum-Yum's Out!". It may not be available anymore. The song is available at iTunes from Ashtar Command. Type in "Ashtar Command" in the search engine at iTunes and you will see "Blister Of The Spotlight" listed as the first song from their album "Love Songs In Advance Of The Landing". Ashtar Command is a band that Chris Holmes is in (he's in the above photo on the right with fellow Ashtar Command member Brian Liesegang on the left) and Rachael Yamagata (below photograph) is doing the backing vocals for that beautiful blend. Our radio audience has been enjoying this song on the FM dial out here in Hawaii. Glad that it got exposure via a hit network television series.

Click here to kick back and enjoy "Blister Of The Spotlight".

Rachael Yamagata and Sara Bareilles - Canada

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata continues her musical tour with Sara Bareilles into Canada and shares her latest adventure.

    ...Canada

    April 21, 2008

On our way to Niagra Falls...

Toronto was a blast. We miss Raining Jane already. Welcoming audience as always and Molsen made everything better. We are still getting our footing as a band and really starting to "play" with each other so every show is an evolution of sorts. I broke my first electric guitar string during "Faster" (first song), but played through alright – at least I think so, cuz I couldn't hear myself, and on we went. More songs happened, more clapping happened and then we drank. We made cheerleader pyramids with band and crew and took some photos for posterity to commemorate our time with RJ gals and then walked for blocks looking for bars, passing through what looked liked Times Square only to end up back on the bus after all had closed down for the night. Picked up some polish sausages with all our spare Canadian coinage and when I woke, well the RV looked like it had had quite a night. Of course I tidied everything up in the morning, which I have to stop doing, mothers out there – any advice how to get your kids to clean their room?... and stop bickering? I don't think it's fair that I have to keep crushing zanax into everyone's morning coffee. (kidding, only kidding). I like the more direct approach. Like barrels...pushed into the falls...

"Faster" is such a great song! That's got to be the first music video and single!

I remember the last time that I was in Canada I found about $60 lying on the ground. There wasn't a soul in sight. No one to return the folded Canadian bills to. Used it for food and entertainment. That sixty bucks went a long way. Our radio show crew can be known to make a pyramid as well:

Seth Swirsky of The Red Button Interview on The Time Machine

Singer-songwriter Seth Swirsky along with Mike Ruekberg are the multi-talented duo behind The Red Button. Seth was a guest on The Time Machine and discussed the album "She's About To Cross My Mind" that is filled with so many musical gems that the album became one of our most played albums on the air for 2007.

In addition to The Red Button, Seth also talked about his solo work and his many records composed for other artists like; Rufus Wainwright, Taylor Dayne, Al Green, Jane Weidlin, Michael McDonald, Celine Dion, The Poppies, Xscape, Olivia Newton-John, Charles & Eddie, Smokey Robinson, Brenda K. Starr, Trey Lorenz, Bonfire, Air Supply, Faith Evans and Tina Turner. In addition to getting the chance to compose songs with Eric Carmen, Seth is also a published best selling author ("Baseball Letters" from 1996, "Every Pitcher Tells A Story" from 1999 and "Something To Write Home About" from 2003) and a film maker. His documentary film "A Year In The Life" is set for a summer release and consists of interviews he had done with his hand-held camera with people who had a story about themselves and The Beatles. It’s not a “tribute” or “anthology” piece, according to Seth, just people from all walks of life with a neat, specific Beatles story.

Seth Swirsky also performed a bit on his guitar during the interview to demonstrate the inner workings of his songwriting craft.

Rachael Yamagata and Sare Bareilles - Chicago and Louisville

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata continues her stretch across the country performing with Sara Bareilles for music fans. Rachael shares about the day between gigs.

    ...Chicago and Louisville

    April 19, 2008

We be in Ohio now, driving and driving and driving. Had a brief obligatory run to Target after Cracker Barrel breakfast and finished the morning off with some parking lot touch football with one near traffic accident. All of these things are staples of this road life of course and I'm a happy camper because not only do we now have paper towels, but I've got some new paper clips, a mini stapler, and a copy of "Atonement" for girl night. Boys are screaming at top of their lungs (new video game) and since we don't have a show tonight I will spend the rest of the day meditating or mediating or just drinking...tbd.

Chicago was a blast and the crowd was delicious and last night's show at Bellarmine College in KY was sweet, outside, and full of "she's too young for you so don't even try it" gals. The students were enthusiastic hosts and I particularly enjoyed the after show radio interview with my new dj buds. Shout out to Bellarmine University radio yo! There is nothing like young eager minds actually wanting to know what you think about music and writing – it's quite disarming really, but self inflating and I got to be slightly pretentious for 15 minutes before taking out the trash from the rv.

Bareilles was on fire and I could not stop laughing during her dialogue with the audience. She's a master one line quipper (real word?) and then can slay you with a her voice and give you shivers. I was in a darker mood for various reasons that I cannot interject into happy blogs, but I do wish sometimes I could let out a primal scream and demand to know if anyone around me is seeing it the way I do and shite if I can't get a witness. I thank the heavens again for sending us Raining Jane, the gals who seem to have never been tainted by anything but beauty and white angelic light goodness guaranteed to cheer anyone and everyone. In the words of another sweet gal of my vida – they are REDUNKULOUS.

And as I think of that same quotable girl, I remember her other words about a relationship that I might as well apply to my days right now. 'It didn't mean as much if you don't shed some tears over it.' So there.

    P.S. – Kerry – it's an ELEPHANT!!!!!! I love love love it.

Samantha – so nice to meet you in person..xoxo your biggest fan in philly.

    Record Store Day

This coming Saturday is "Record Store Day". A few of us from The Time Machine came from record stores and the rest of us hung around record stores.

Check out the site www.recordstoreday.com that explains what this day is all about. You will find some nice quotes (including some former guests on The Time Machine) about this disappearing twentieth century memory at the site and we will begin here with an earlier 2006 post from Maui musician Dave Carroll and follow that personal moment with the author of "High Fidelity" that anyone who has ever truly been in a record store can relate to.

For 30 years; the hippest store on this little rock in the middle of the big blue was Request Music in Lahaina. Due to a medical situation; the man behind that oasis of culture; Jerry Byers, had to close the doors recently. Jerry is the best bass player and the best hang I've ever known. His store was where I found my connection to the pulse of humanity. Jerry has always held it down musically with humility and grace. And his awareness of great early talent is unfaltering. Every day after work, I'd walk over to his store; have a beer and discuss Music, Art, Politics, Sex,...you name it; with a small group of folks, Good friends; We all knew that it was too good to last...and it was. Now; I'm counting on you guys to keep me connected to the stuff that keeps me singing. You're doing a good job; but for me; there will never be anything like a great record store. Here's to you Jer!

    - Dave Carroll

"Yes, yes, I know. It's easier to download music, and probably cheaper. But what's playing on your favourite download store when you walk into it?

Nothing, that's what. Who are you going to meet in there? Nobody. Where are the notice boards offering flatshares and vacant slots in bands destined for superstardom? Who's going to tell you to stop listening to that and start listening to this? Go ahead and save yourself a couple of quid. The saving will cost you a career, a set of cool friends, musical taste and, eventually, your soul. Record stores can't save your life. But they can give you a better one."

    - Nick Hornby

"You can't roll a joint on an iPod - buy vinyl!"

    - Shelby Lynne

"There’s nothing as glamorous to me as a record store. When I recently played Amoeba in LA, I realised what fantastic memories such a collection of music brings back when you see it all in one place. This is why I’m more than happy to support Record Store Day and I hope that these kinds of stores will be there for us all for many years to come. Cheers!"

    - Paul McCartney

"The record store. Where true fandom begins. It's the soul of discovery, and the place where you can always return for that mighty buzz. The posters. The imports. The magazines. The discerning clerks, paid in vinyl, professors of the groove. Long live that first step inside, when the music envelopes you and you can't help it. You walk up to the counter and ask the question that begins the journey -- "what is that you're playing?" Long live the record store, and the guys and girls who turn the key, and unlock those dreams, every day."

    - Cameron Crowe

"I buy CDs all the time. I'll go into a record store and just buy $500 worth of CDs. I will! I am singlehandedly supporting what's left of the record business.

I hate to see record stores disappear, and I'm old-school in that I think you should pay for your music. But what my kids do is download a lot of things, pay for them, and then if they love something, they'll get the CD. That may be the future.”

    - Bruce Springsteen

"Music is an important part of our culture and record stores play a vital part in keeping the power of music alive"

    - Chuck Berry

“I just really love anything that’s not faceless and where people know each other and work together to build, like, a community. People that work there know their stuff; they’re not coming in today to sell music and tomorrow to sell TVs and the next day to sell whatever. Somebody can come in and say, “I want somebody who plays piano music” or something, and somebody will actually tell them to listen to my record and they’ll play it in the store for them and they’ll talk about it. You can connect in some way with somebody who’s doing something that they love. And that it’s important to have something that is being done just out of true love for new music that is being welcomed into the world. People should go to their indie record store and find out what is happening.”

    - Regina Spektor

“It’s important to keep indie record stores alive because their unique environments introduce music lovers to things in a very personal way.”

    - Norah Jones

“The indie record stores are the backbone of the recorded music culture. It's where we go to network, browse around, and find new songs to love. The stores whose owners and staff live for music have spread the word about exciting new things faster and with more essence than either radio or the press. Any artist that doesn't support the wonderful ma and pa record stores across America is contributing to our own extinction.”

    - Joan Jett

“I have watched independent record stores evaporate all over America and Europe. That's why I go into as many as I can and buy records whenever possible. If we lose the independent record store, we lose big. Every time you buy your records at one of these places, it's a blow to the empire.”

    - Henry Rollins

"Independent record stores are like a casino where you put down your money and you always win. How amazing to discover gems you didn't know about, to meet someone more passionate than you are, and to feel at home in a place you may never have been to before. I'm convinced they will never lose their place - Long may they rule."

    - KT Tunstall

"I was introduced to lots of great music through my local record store. It was a place where people knew music and they knew me, and could make great suggestions and discoveries. Whether it is in the physical world or on-line, the value of a great and knowledgeable record store has not gone away"

    - Peter Gabriel

"As a little five points alumni of 11 years, back in the 1900's, I used to live behind criminal records on a street called colquitt in an apartment with a rotating cast of roommate's girlfriends. I would be on the road about 300 days out of the year, and home on most mondays and tuesdays. Those were my days to go get cultured on new and exciting music, and buy my dimebag habit of U.K. Magazines. The thing is, I would have never gotten this kind of education or variety of pop culture fun from a supermarket that sells Shakira records.

Don't get me wrong. My day job pays me well for making records for those kinds of folks, but I don't wanna listen to it. I mean, would you wanna eat donuts for dinner, if you made them all day in a factory? Nope. Same with music. thanks Eric...."

    - Butch Walker

“The idea of, ‘The journey is the destination’ is put into action by browsing in an indie record store. Besides, a human being is a much better guide than a ‘More Like This’ link on the internet.”

    - Patton Oswalt

"Indie record stores were what we had to start with, and they're all we've got left."

When I was a kid, I spent the better part of my time in indie record stores, sifting through bins of CDs for new import EPs from my favorite Brit bands, befriending employees with loads of opinions to share, and discovering what I loved about music which had nothing to do with what was being sold to me on the radio. The handwritten "Staff Picks" were eternally cool, even if I sometimes hated the records. Now, my favorite "Mom and Pop" shops have started closing around me, I have to go into these superstores where they don't know what EPs are, they can tell you where a CD is but nothing about it, and the only discs they have in stock are what's on the radio. I feel so lucky to have grown up in indie stores where there was as much humanity in the selling of music as in the making of it.

    - James McMurtry

"Independent record stores are aural cathedrals, havens for those who find music as much a spiritual endeavor as passing entertainment. Indie employees will go out of their way to help you find a rare or back-catalogued recording, commiserating over neglected artists & all-but-forgotten masterpieces. They offer discounts & suggest records they enjoy with genuine interest & enthusiasm. Indies embody mom&pop, individualist expression - they're in it for love, not to turn a huge profit or to bend popular taste to a uniform will. viva la indie!"

    - Nellie McKay

"If it weren't for Criminal Records, Wax-n-facts and other indie record stores I could have only sold my CD's at my shows and by mail order as an independent artist. The greatest stores that have character and include a much wider range of music of music are all independent, mom and pop stores."

    - Shawn Mullins

"When I was growing up in my little town of Malvern, Arkansas, we had a shop called Paula's Record Shop, run by this lady Paula, and we would come in and stay all day thumbing through the 45's and the albums, and just look at everything. We couldn't afford to buy anything so we would just hang there all day - it was really like Oz to us. I got my entire musical education from that record store and the radio. We would hear the songs and the bands on the radio and we'd go straight to Paula's and stare at the covers and read the album notes.

It was the only record store in town. There weren't any big conglomerates or any other record outlets. It was just this little shop - it seemed at that time so huge to me, but I know now it was just this little bitty building. My friends and I couldn't believe it when we went in there. It was like magic to us. When I'm out on tour or on location, I'll find whatever independent record store is around and that's where I'll go.

There are still some cities that have record stores that give me that same feeling when I used to walk into Paula's. In Austin, I go to Waterloo, in Minneapolis I go to the Electric Fetus. I usually have to get an extra suitcase to bring home with me on the plane to carry everything I bought at those shops!

Independent record stores are really the only places left with the actual spirit of music as I knew it growing up, and hopefully those will be around for 50 years from now because that's where it feels magical - you don't feel like you're buying a tire iron, tube of shampoo, a 12 pack, a bag of Cheetos and a record."

    - Billy Bob Thornton

"A place where you go to escape everyday stresses & hang out with your imaginary friends."

    - Jason Wade of Lifehouse

"When I was a kid, I spent the better part of my time in indie record stores, sifting through bins of CDs for new import EPs from my favorite Brit bands, befriending employees with loads of opinions to share, and discovering what I loved about music which had nothing to do with what was being sold to me on the radio. I feel so lucky to have grown up in indie stores where there was as much humanity in the selling of music as in the making of it."

    - Cary Brothers

"I grew up in indie record stores. Bill's Records and Tapes ("And Tapes"?!?) was THE destination for my friends when all we could do was ride our bikes to avoid our parents and homework, etc...

I discovered my calling, my passion (though I dare say it wasn't the passion Bill wanted me to discover - if you know Bill, you know what I'm talking about, but I digress), in indie record stores. There was a little chain called Peaches that featured handprints in stone blocks of all my favorite rockers. I discovered that my 12 year old hands were the exact same size as Joan Jett's when she was in the Runaways. Something magical happens in these stores. Like if you stand there long enough, you realize that the fourth wall doesn't exist, that you can be on the stage or in the studio just like your heroes. Thank god for the indies."

    - Rhett Miller

"I still believe in the religious experience of going into a record store, getting what you need, or finding something new and having that moment of excitement when you get back to the car and the frustration of ripping off that sticky thing. I've found a lot of my favorite artists and bands through the recommendations of whoever is working at the store. I remember specifically the day Fiona Apple's "Tidal" came out, it was a Tuesday, I was in 6th grade and I bought this record having never heard of the girl, and I was totally (and still am) slayed by it."

Rachael Yamagata and Sare Bareilles - Milwaukee and Minneapolis

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata is currently on tour with Sara Bareilles and checks in to keep us up to date.

    milwaukee and minneapolis...

    April 16, 2008

Wednesday morning. Picnic bench outside Best Western parking lot.

Three days in and it already feels like a month. We've already had one band battle, one great show, one heavily influenced by jack daniels (not as great) show and are on our first drive day. Loved the Pabst theater in Milwaukee (Gary – you rock) and last night's show at the Fine Line (Minneapolis) was schweet. The audiences have been receptive and stellar so far, welcoming us and we are beginning to feed off of them. We have all fallen in love with Raining Jane and Sara's band and the initial after show hangs have proved that we are one for all in this and would prove worthy in a bar fight should any of our new crew be taken on. It's always a strange thing to throw new people together in travel and as cliché as it is, it's not really that different from the first days of summercamp when you size eachother up, trade initial life facts and do shots of lovely things that explain the ibuprofen in my pocket. Ok, maybe you don't have alcohol when you are twelve, but you do have sleepovers and groggy walks to breakfast and new little crushes form and whatever daily routine you had is thrown out the window.

Last night we considered auctioning off band members to compete with the brilliant merch that lines the tables, none of which is ours. There's nothing like a good ole keepsake to take away from a night, but alas for now it is the show and well, whatever the youtube gurus post. I did have a nice moment in Milwaukee when I decided it would be fun to walk off stage still playing guitar, but didn't account for a too short cable and so got nearly there and had to lay the darn thing on the floor, tripping up my oh so cool idea. Life. Love it.

And the loneliness thang does creep in as well, but we'll hold off on that till later. For now, since it is day three, I will dig my sneakers out of my bag and join dan for a fitness center run, while I still remember that I used to run everyday and it does a body good. Signing off as Rachael yamagaGOUDA, my new apparent "cheese" nickname (we all got one), wishing you the best and muchos gracias for coming out and watching us play.

    Love love love

Rachael Yamagata Tours With Sara Bareilles

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata is on the road and found the time at this hour when most of the country is sound asleep to drop in with in the latest news.

    TOUR BEGINS TODAY...

It's 3 am. Do you know where your children are? I know where mine lay...One is above my head in over driver compartment, one in back bed and two are taking hot showers (hopefully not together) and rest in hotel. I think we are in Milwaukee, but there is no way for me to be sure. If you've been in one roadside parking lot, you've been in them all.

We, dare I say it, are on TOUR. Sigh. Big great gosh darn sigh of relief. We will meet up with great gal pal Sara Bareilles tomorrow which I'm very much looking forward to. Last I saw her was over a year ago at the end of our Hotel Café tour together. She has been everywhere since then and I can't wait to hear of her adventures...In case you've been slumbering, she's the one with "Love Song" topping all charts and her sweet and sassy self will charm your pants off live.

I can't even begin to go into where I've been or what I've been doing mostly because it's all blurred in my mind. It has been two years of dramatic change and I'm "in the flow" as they say so it's hard for me to know what will come next. I DO have a record for you. I AM going to get it to you. All the other details are boring so at the risk of seeming like the boy who cried wolf, hang tight.

Did I mention the sweet ass RV we are in? I have to call it that because it's too hilarious for any other description. We are the Griswalds on some Midwest vacation. I have packed too much and apparently have learned nothing about streamlining necessities. Feather beds, decorative lights, books, bags, dvds, paper plates and aspirin all strewn everywhere. I will Martha Stewart the shite out of this thing tomorrow. We may have to throw in a camping adventure on one of these days and take full advantage of the vibe.

As for the band – I've got Dan the man on bass, Jlo (Jason that is) on guitar and Hollywood Giraldi on drums. Craig G is manning the tour and I'm going to be den mother diva. It's a funny thing in this place because on the one hand you are ringleader of the pack and on the other you are attended to, bailed out, saved and inspired by the same pack. I've been in bed by 11 for months now and it's 3:40am and I'm the only one up. These are my favorite hours and I thought I'd lost them. I get it now. It's all coming back. I need travel, music, friends. I'm a pack leader and I have not died. We are on tour.
