Rachael Yamagata Returns With A Heavyweight Interview On The Time Machine

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata returned to The Time Machine to discuss her latest self released EP "Heavyweight" which will be officially released to the public this November 20th. Her tour across America and Canada kicked off last week. Liz Phair and Madi Diaz are among the performing musicians on her latest batch of songs.

    The Time Machine

    The Time Machine

It's always a treat for The Time Machine Radio Crew to have Rachael on the broadcast as a guest. Rachael's vocals have graced Maui's FM dial for years as she continued to keep busy between each of her albums by co-writing and singing on albums of other artists. The list is long and varied; Duncan Sheik, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Robin Danar, Mike Viola, Margaret Cho, Toots & The Maytals, Ben Lee, Graham Colton, Katherine McPhee, Rhett Miller, John Francis, Jill Cunniff, Dan Wilson, Bill Deasey, Ray LaMontagne, Chris Holmes, Ben Arthur, Jason Mraz, Bright Eyes and Mandy Moore...with so many music projects outside of her own, it appears that she will continue to be on our playlists for years to come.

    The Time Machine

Her 2004 debut album release "Happenstance" produced by John Alagia kept pulling in our listeners and locking in her status as "most played artist" right up until the end of 2007. Perfect timing for us because her sophomore double album release "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" was released in 2008. That album was produced by Mike Mogis (with a couple of songs produced by John Alagia) and it was an album worth the wait filled with many talented musicians like Kevin Salem, Michael Chaves, Daniel Clarke and Mark Goldenberg adding their musical gifts to the project. Her third album "Chesapeake" was her first official indie release and now with this EP coming out just a little over a year later, the artist is primed to release more music in a much quicker time frame between releases and that suits us fine.

    The Time Machine

Rachael's music has had a home on our playlists and in our hearts since her debut release. Be sure to pick up a copy of her first album, "Happenstance" and her second, "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart". Rachael topped our airplay chart for 2010 with her song with Semisonic's Dan Wilson, "You Take My Troubles Away" and closed out the year with her yuletide song, "Baby Come Find Me At Christmas". In 2011, "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday", Rachael's cover of the classic song from The Muppets where Gonzo sang around a campfire in 1979's "The Muppet Movie" has been embraced by The Time Machine staff and listeners to make it one of the most played songs of the year. The song saw its official release on Disney's tribute album "The Muppets: The Green Album" on August 23rd in preparation for Disney's November release of the Jason Segel film "The Muppet Movie". Other artists featured along with Rachael include; Weezer & Paramore’s Hayley Williams, OK Go, Sondre Lerche, Andrew Bird, Matt Nathanson, The Fray and My Morning Jacket. Rachael's album "Chesapeake" was the most played album on the air for 2011 and continued with heavy airplay throughout 2012. The album is a musical gem and is highly recommended for your personal music collection.

Michael Carpenter and Andrew Curry Interviews on The Time Machine

Singer-songwriter, rocker, producer and all around great guy Michael Carpenter was a guest on The Time Machine. The gifted artist has been a part of The Time Machine's playlist for over a decade and he even produced the first theme song with Marty Rudnick for The Time Machine seven years ago. Hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney have both referred to Mike on the FM dial as "Australia's Todd Rundgren" in describing to an American audience the scope of his talent as not only a songwriter but a producer involved in numerous musical acts.

Michael Carpenter joined the broadcast along with Andrew Curry from the Monsters of Lite Rock website to unveil the world broadcast debut of Michael's arrangement of the classic song "We Don't Talk Anymore" by Cliff Richard. The song will be featured on the upcoming 2013 album "Drink A Toast To Innocence: A Tribute To Lite Rock". Andrew Curry has become a fixture on The Time Machine Radio Show the past few months discussing the album project and featuring songs from the forthcoming release. Two completed songs in and the album is shaping up to be one of the most played albums on the air for The Time Machine in 2013. In addition to two of Michael Carpenter's original songs, The Time Machine Crew thought that in honor of the brand new Cliff Richard cover, that it would fun to feature a number of other covers that Mike has released over a one year period on several albums. Did we mention that he's a busy guy so how he found the time to do all of this is anyone's guess.

Kelly Jones Returns To The Time Machine (...and this time she's kissing Santa on Christmas Eve)

Singer-songwriter Kelly Jones returned to The Time Machine to share her latest song. The Time Machine Crew were honored to present the world broadcast debut of Kelly's first Christmas single "Kissing Santa On Christmas Eve". After three albums and an EP, this single couldn't have come at a better time of the year, as the radio staff and crew have been waiting patiently for Kelly to express herself musically. Four years ago, The Time Machine expressed an interest in Kelly recording a Christmas song, now the wait is over. She delivered a song so catchy with lyrics that we can't stop singing out loud that we know that this song will be played every Christmas on the FM dial on Maui for years to come. In addition to her lovely vocals, Kelly is also playing glockenspiel along with Eric Summer on strings, Scott Seiver on drums and Mike Viola playing bass, keyboards and guitars. In addition to Mike producing the holiday single, he also collaborated with Tim Adams for the motion picture soundtrack to "That's What She Said" starring Alia Shawkat, Marcia DeBonis and Anne Heche. The film was written by Kellie Overbey and directed by actress Carrie Preston from HBO's "True Blood". Kelly Jones collaborated with Mike Viola on two songs. In addition to those two songs, there are also performances by Inara George, Rachael Yamagata, Tracy Bonham, Nicole Atkins, Sarah Cronin, Jess Furman and Wendy Wang.

    The Time Machine

Kelly had released an EP titled "Melon" with Mike Viola as a duo and before that Mike had produced and arranged her third album titled "SheBANG!". Adam Schlesinger from Ivy and Fountains Of Wayne also co-wrote a song with Kelly for the album. Along with her original songs and a batch of songs written with Mike Viola, "SheBANG!" received heavy airplay here on the Maui airwaves for over four years. The album clocks in at just under 28 minutes and all ten songs are fantastic. Four years ago, a review on The Time Machine website stated that the album was "So catchy and melodic, as if early eighties Marshall Crenshaw and The Bangles decided to work together, might give you an idea of what this album full of pop gems sounds like." The album "SheBANG!" can be found at CD Baby and became one of our most played albums on the air that year joining releases from Rachael Yamagata, The Pretenders, She & Him, Rick Springfield and Randy Newman.

Eytan Mirsky Interview and Andrew Curry Reveals First Finished Song For "Drink A Toast To Innocence: A Tribute To Lite Rock"

Andrew Curry is the man behind the Facebook page "Monsters Of Lite Rock" and he was a guest on The Time Machine Radio Show a few weeks ago to announce an upcoming album on vinyl, CD and digital download titled "Drink A Toast To Innocence: A Tribute To Lite Rock". Andrew shared the details with radio host Michael McCartney of how the Power Pop homage to the "Lite Rock" favorites of the seventies and eighties began and the story behind the Monsters of Lite Rock website. As promised on that episode, Andrew stated that he would return to The Time Machine broadcast with each finished song from the various talented musical artists who will give their spin on the songs of their youth. Rocker and singer-songwriter Eytan Mirsky was the first artist to step out of the recording studio with his cover of "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes. The Time Machine Crew looks forward to more of these segments as they lead to the official release of the album and culminating in a special radio broadcast highlighting the album's material by today's artists. Eytan also returned to the program to not only discuss his involvement with the Lite Rock project but also share with the radio audience some of the inspiration behind his brand new album "Year Of The Mouse".

Taylor Locke Interview On The Time Machine

Singer-songwriter Taylor Locke was a guest on The Time Machine. He's not only the namesake of Taylor Locke & The Roughs (with band members Chris Price, Joe Seiders and Mikey Pere plus former members Charlotte Froom and Mikey McCormack) but also a founding member and lead guitarist of Rooney, who have been firmly planted on The Time Machine's playlists since 2003. Taylor shares his thoughts behind both bands along with his upcoming web series "Planet Rocke with Taylor Locke" filled with guests, music, animation, puppets, furry fuzzy aliens and zany fun being touted as the first music talk show live from space. Some of the cast members include Ned Brower as Pterry P. Pteroydactle, Mischa Barton as Trixie, Renaldo Odlaner as Fuzuki and Patrick O'Sullivan as Fuzoko. Producer George Loomis is behind the scenes along with Ian Asbjornsen, Lucy Michel, Courtenay Williams, Ericka Clevenger, Cameron Brooks, Alexander Gabrielli, Teddy Cecil, Dominoe Farris-Gilbert, Kara Kieffer, Amy Reedy, Joe Rojas, Katie Broad, Nate Rothstein, Teddy Cecil, Luke Schlink, Bleu, Kyle Fredrickson and Megan Benavent. If that isn't enough to keep Taylor Locke busy, he's also part of Rumours, which is the premier Fleetwood Mac tribute act based in Los Angeles, with tickets currently on sale for their show January 10th, 2013 at The Roxy in LA. The group formed this past summer and recreates the legendary band in it's radio stronghold heyday from 1975-1979. The band is comprised of Jesika Miller, Rebecca Fishman, Ned Brower, Taylor Locke and Nic Johns. The Time Machine Crew on Maui is spoiled with Mick Fleetwood's own local band called Island Rumours that performs around the island but this Southern California tribute quintet is so focused that they've meticulously put together a show that spares no detail. From period accurate equipment and costumes to spot on characterizations and musical performances, Rumours takes you back to a time when music was still an unbridled cultural experience and bands weren't afraid to put on a show. If you find yourself in Los Angeles this Januray, relive the rock and roll magic with Rumours.

Brand new music was also featured from Wyatt Funderburk, Rachael Yamagata and Sounds Like Digging. Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include; Rooney, The Smith Bros., Raspberries and Emitt Rhodes.
