2009 on The Time Machine - Part Two

Daphne Matsumoto and Michael McCartney rang in the new year and the new decade with songs that got the most airplay on The Time Machine during 2009. Summer Blue and Jenny Leong served as producers keeping the radio duo in check and well behaved. Rockers and singer-songwriters, Chloe F. Orwell and Brad Elvis from the band The Handcuffs (pictured above), had their album "Electroluv" garnering so much airplay last year that The Time Machine Crew had wondered if they'd ever find the keys to unlock those musical handcuffs and make room for other artists on Maui's FM dial. Likewise for Rob Bonfiglio's album "Bring On The Happy", Mark Hudson's "The Artist" and Mandy Moore's album "Amanda Leigh". Gail Swanson released her long anticipated follow-up to "Living In A Movie" with her end of the year release of "Simple Truth" and among the number of wonderful songs getting spins at the end of the year included her duet with Michael McDonald on the classic Skeeter Davis smash hit "End Of The World". Some of the finest musical acts have recorded that song over the years like The Carpenters, John Mellencamp, Loretta Lynn, Herman's Hermits, Brenda Lee, Bobby Vinton, Johnny Mathis, Julie London, Eddy Arnold, Dottie West, Nancy Sinatra, Sonia Evans, Twiggy, Claudine Longet, ABBA's Agnetha Fältskog, Rosie Flores, Patti Page, Anne Murray, Nina Gordon, Vonda Shepard, Exposé, The Vanguards, Leigh Nash, Lobo and even Susan Boyle last year. This time around, what makes the record so magical is the simplicity of Michael McDonald's ukulele playing against the vocal performance of both Gail and himself. Other artists dominating the playlists last year are featured on this Maui afternoon aircheck including; Throwback Suburbia, Michael Carpenter, Lisa Donnelly, Bangles, Mike Viola, Jason Falkner, Pete Best Band, Anny Celsi, Kelly Jones, Ida Maria, Butch Walker, The Major Labels, Rachael Yamagata, The Holograms and James Carter Cathcart. Plus another 2008 song that continued with heavy airplay into 2009 was "Love Take Me Down (To The Streets) from Joey Curatolo, Amy Miles, Chris Anderson and Charles Ganja.

A Kung Fu Christmas on The Time Machine

When radio hosts Daphne Matsumoto and Michael McCartney get together, their love for shave ice always bubbles to the surface. Sooner or later that sort of adulation will end up slipping into conversation on the FM dial of Maui's airwaves. Every member of The Time Machine Crew appreciates the fine taste of a perfect shave ice but leave it to Daphne and Michael to bring it up during a Christmas radio show.








A cool yule of tunes were piled high in the studio with the help of radio co-host Summer Blue along with producers Ashley Starr and Jenny Leong. Brand new Christmas songs were featured from Jana Peri and Chip Taylor. Rob Bonfiglio Returns To The Time Machine

One of most played albums on the air from 2008 is "Bring On The Happy" from Rob Bonfiglio. Rob is no stranger to our playlists. Since the turn of the century, Rob's music has filled the Maui airwaves as a solo artist, a member of The Better Days, The Skies Of America and Superstone (the brainchild of rocker Ken Sharp). Rob's musical career goes further back into the 90's as a member of the RCA label band Wanderlust and his recent musical output has been featured in the soundtracks of motion pictures.

The Time Machine crew were quite happy to have Rob return as a guest to the program. Rob discussed his album "Bring On The Happy" and shared some insight on some of his songs.


Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM radio broadcast include; Nushu, Rachael Yamagata, Kelly Jones, Ken Sharp, Jim Boggia and The Honeys.

Wake Up Tired In Paradise

Summer Blue, Jenny Leong and Michael McCartney returned to The Time Machine studios after a brief vacation which featured guest DJ Ed Lynn goes into detail on this afternoon FM aircheck. Ed Lynn is the host of the podcast "Suitcase Full Of Dimes" which is one of the finest indie music podcasts online today.


Some of the artists heard on this broadcast were also part of the concert line-up for the International Pop Overthrow in Los Angeles which is still going on. If you're in Southern California this week be sure to check it out. One of our most played artists, Emitt Rhodes, came to see rocker Ken Sharp perform his latest batch of songs.


Ken Sharp (who is pictured above hoisted into the air by Rob Bonfiglio from The Skies Of America and Michael McCartney from The Time Machine) opens up this radio aircheck with a song off of his critically acclaimed album "Sonic Crayons" (Four stars from the hard to please MOJO no less). Other artists from the International Pop Overthrow heard on this broadcast include: The Liking Strikes, Michael Ubaldini, Blake Jones and The Trike Shop, Poplord (it is their song "Wake Up Tired" that this episode lifted for a radio podcast title) and Nushu.

The Skies Of America is the band that lets Rob Bonfiglio show off his musical craft. Rob returned to The Time Machine to share with us his take on his early years, his stint with Wanderlust and Superstone plus sharing his latest batch of music from The Skies Of America.
