Rachael Yamagata Returns To The Time Machine

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata has been our most played artist on the radio since her EP release back in 2003. Some of her earlier material were on the air before 2003 and including her stint with Bumpus, has made her one of our core artists who keeps delivering one wonderful recorded performance after another. Her approach to songs from other artists like Joni Mitchell , George Harrison and Judy Sill have kept her seven year stronghold in place on our radio dial. Add in her work with other artists as varied as; Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Robin Danar, Margaret Cho, Toots & The Maytalls, Ben Lee, Graham Colton, Katherine McPhee, Rhett Miller, Jill Cunniff, Dan Wilson, Bill Deasey, Ray LaMontagne, Chris Holmes, Ben Arthur, Jason Mraz, Bright Eyes and Mandy Moore...it appears that she will continue to be on our playlists for years to come.

Her debut release "Happenstance" produced by John Alagia kept pulling in our listeners and locking her status as "most played artist" right up until the end of 2007. Perfect timing for us because her sophomore release "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" was released in 2008. The album was produced by Mike Mogis (with a couple of songs produced by John Alagia) and it was an album worth the wait filled with many talented musicians like Kevin Salem, Michael Chavez, Daniel Clarke and Mark Goldenberg adding their musical gifts to the project. All of the musicians on Rachael's album raise her music to a level that many artists could only hope to accomplish in a lifetime.

Fittingly, All Music Guide's Andrew Leahey, wrote that she matches such strong songcraft with equally strong content. "So for those of you falling in love," she advises during the first disc's title track, "keep it kind, keep it good, keep it right. Throw yourself in the midst of danger, but keep one eye open at night." Spoken like a true veteran of solitude and heartbreak, and performed like one of the strongest songwriters to emerge during the early 21st century. We offer this radio aircheck of another Maui afternoon where this gifted singer-songwriter dropped in for an interview on The Time Machine with host Michael McCartney. Rachael shared her musical inspirations and insights for the double album with our radio audience. While we wait to hear what her collaboration with Mike Viola will sound like, we bring you this radio show for your listening pleasure.

Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include; Ben Lee, Bumpus, Robin Danar, Jason Mraz, Graham Colton, Chris Holmes, Ashtar Command, Bill Deasy, Mandy Moore and John Alagia.

Robin Danar Interview on The Time Machine

Producer Robin Danar was a guest on The Time Machine. We were honored to have him on the show to discuss his album "Altered States". Robin began in the studios of New York City engineering records for mentors such as Steve Lillywhite, Phil Ramone, Gary Katz and Russ Titelman with artists like Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Donald Fagen, Material and Chaka Khan. At the same time, Robin was doing live sound and recording at CBGB's in its prime with bands ranging from Blondie, the Ramones, Patti Smith and Television through the Dead Boys and The New York Dolls. This barely scratches the surface.

For over a decade while mixing front of house sound internationally for acts including Laurie Anderson, Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, The B-52's, The Church, The Blue Nile and Cyndi Lauper, Robin was always finding new artists, developing their careers and producing their albums. He also continued producing live performance recordings and broadcasts. Recent projects include albums with Judith Owen and Abba Roland as well as live recordings with Macy Gray, Five for Fighting and Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise. He was also involved in recording Bonnie Raitt and Los Lobos for the Wim Wenders film "A Soul of a Man", part of the PBS series "Martin Scorcese Presents The Blues".

"Altered States" features an eclectic group of talented artists. Robin's vision of pairing together musicians with radical arrangements far from their own stylistic sensibilities works magic on the album and the concept of a notable artist doing a well known song outside of their genre is very sweet indeed. Featured artists include Pete Yorn, Rachael Yamagata, Lisa Loeb, Paul Buchanan (The Blue Nile), Inara George (The Bird & The Bee), Julianna Raye, Jim Bianco, Gary Jules, Minibar, Julian Coryell, Quincy Coleman, Steve Reynolds, Andy Levin, Kinky, Jesca Hoop, The Section Quartet and Holly Palmer doing highly original versions of songs by The Damned, Michael Jackson, Morrissey, Talking Heads, Johnny Mathis, The Rolling Stones, The Band and more!

Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast that radio hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney featured include; Blondie, The Romantics, David Bowie, Rob Bonfiglio, Old 97's, Richard X. Heyman, Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon, Neil Diamond, Smith & Pyle, The Lemonheads, Dexter Freebish, Linda Perry, Burton Cummings, Raspberries, Don Henley, Pretenders, Mike Viola, Mandy Moore, Fountains of Wayne and Ingrid Michaelson.

Maree McRae Interview on The Time Machine for Maui and Hawaii Performances

Singer-songwriter Maree McRae is concert bound for both Maui and Hawaii next week. She was a guest on The Time Machine to discuss her music from her latest album "Urgency" and share her enthusiasm for her upcoming performances in Lahaina and Kona. Her sophomore album is filled with heartfelt songs and includes the song heard on The Time Machine for the past year, "Breeze". Joining Maree during her Hawaii concerts will be Celtic Thunder's Linda Hickman.

Also heard on the broadcast is a tribute to guitarist and producer Tony Peluso who passed away June 5th. His fuzz guitar solo on "Goodbye To Love" by The Carpenters is absolute pure pop rock perfection. Not only was he the guitarist on The Carpenters hit version of Klaatu's "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" but Tony was also the DJ character voice on the intro. He's produced The Jackson 5, The Four Tops, Michael Learns To Rock, Smokey Robinson, Stephanie Mills, Danny O'Keefe, Lauren Christy, The Triplets, Dave Koz, Michael Jackson, Jack Wagner and played with Seals & Crofts plus Deana Carter. He's worked with a lot of artists in addition to engineering for Kenny Loggins, The Fixx, Boyz II Men, Player, Apollonia, Gipsy Kings and Maui's resident singer-songwriter Jennifer Weatherly. The list is long...which resulted in four Grammy Awards and over 150 million records sold. Tony is survived by his sons, Joe and Andrew. Funeral services will be held this Saturday, June 26 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Northridge, California.

Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include; Courtney Jaye, Vertical Horizon, The Beatles, Nick Lowe, Tommy Tutone, Shawn Colvin, Carpenters, Rick Derringer, John Lennon, Stealers Wheel, Sara Evans, Photoglo, The Sylvers and Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen.

Farrah Interview on The Time Machine

Farrah's latest album is their fourth and The Time Machine Crew was pleased to see the new release arrive at the station at the end of May. The songs that fill the self titled album are pure pop bliss. They released their first single "Terry" back in 1999 but it wasn't until their debut album "Moustache" in 2001 that The Time Machine began to start playing the group on the airwaves in Hawaii. We've been embracing the band's sound for the last nine years and the previous five Christmas seasons were given a nice twist on the FM dial with "Christmas Is Cancelled (This Year)".

The Time Machine was happy to have Farrah on the radio broadcast this past week. Cotton Mather's former drummer, Dana Myzer, joined the band but was unable to be a part of the program last week. Discussing the band's music were Andrew Campbell, Michelle Margherita (The Bad Machines and Montana) and lead vocalist Jez Ashurst. Jez has also written songs recorded by Cliff Richard, Hanson, Boyzone, The Click Five, Will Young, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Brian McFadden. Michelle, who handles the bass playing duties, also takes on lead vocals on the song "Got The Best Of Me". A wonderful musical delight. The band members were a blast to have on The Time Machine.

Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM aircheck include new songs from The School, The Rubinoos and She & Him plus The Smith Bros., Jeff Lynne and Pilot.

She and Him Cover Timeless Classic "Fools Rush In"

A duo that has been warming up the FM dial on The Time Machine since 2007, She & Him make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. What began as a fascinating, no-strings attached collaboration on 2008’s "Volume One" has evolved into a bona-fide touring band, and with 2010’s "Volume Two" She & Him are here to stay. Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward are as complementary a musical pair as Les Paul and Mary Ford; hearing them on “Fools Rush In” feels like getting together with two old friends. Their song choice fits their sound, both admirers of the beautifully constructed pop that sprung from the radio in the 1960s and ’70s.

Rube Bloom and Johnny Mercer collaborated on several songs in the ’40s, though “Fools Rush In” is considered their timeless classic. Cover versions of the song are numerous, though teen-idol Rick Nelson’s 1963 version is perhaps the most critically loved. While only reaching #12 on the Billboard pop charts that year, his version’s everlasting impression on country, folk and rockabilly music for decades after is a testament to his legacy.

True to the spirit of his original, She & Him re-craft this enduring classic and give it a touch of torch, a bit of country western and a gentle dusting of the rockabilly that was Rick Nelson’s passion.
