The Time Machine's Most Played Albums Of 2011

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata celebrates another musical milestone this year of heavy airplay on the Maui airwaves with her latest album "Chesapeake". She's joined by heavy hitters The Bangles, Mike Viola and the Valley Isle's own Willie K. and The Throwdowns. It's the last day of 2011 and we decided to look back at our most played albums on the air for 2011 before we begin our final broadcast of the year. Everyone argued over a top ten or one hundred list because there were so many choices. We decided that instead of bickering over different music choices (and trust us...this is what we love to do...bicker about movies and music), we would present to you our most played albums on the air for this last year. This way there was no wiggle room for critical favorites. The funny part was that after the list was completed, everyone gathered around, smiled and agreed that these albums did fill our hearts and souls musically and that's all that matters in the end.

Gail Swanson's "Simple Truth", Mark Hudson's "The Artist", Nushu's "Hula", Farrah's self titled fourth album, "Galaxyland" by Maple Mars, The Rubinoos with "Automatic Toaster" and "Four" from Bleu continued with heavy spins into 2011. Other carried over artists with heavy airplay into 2011 from 2010 included Brian Ray, The Band Perry, Bruno Mars, Dave Stephens and The Doobie Brothers.

Still rolling along after over three years in heavy rotation was 2008's monster double album "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" from Rachael Yamagata and her songs dominated the airplay as did Anya Marina's "Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II" which we didn't realize at the time was not officially released until the following year and we were spinning an advance promo copy like the happy music campers that we are. The Time Machine Crew were honored to have the opportunity to share with our radio audience the wonderful songs off of "The Exotic Sounds Of Courtney Jaye" from Courtney Jaye for nearly two years before it surfaced for public consumption. The audience loves her style and the year 2010 finally saw the official CD and digital release of her self described "TropiCali sound" that is an incredible blend of country, California rock, Hawaiian music, folk and other genres that put together make up a sound that creates an atmosphere of pure pop bliss. That album continued with heavy airplay into 2011 as the entire radio staff anticipates Courtney Jaye's upcoming 2012 album release. The Time Machine Radio Crew is also waiting to hear the 2012 album release from Lisa Mychols who kept her presence on the airwaves in 2011 with her musical partner Hillary Burton from the duo Nushu with heavy airplay of their faithful cover of Phil Seymour's "Precious To Me". That cover was just a taste of Nushu's upcoming 2012 covers album.

2011's powerhouse singles and focus tracks also came on like gangbusters with songs like "A Thousand Wonders" by Brock Walsh, "Sophisticated" from Sarina Paris, "Loud Music" by Michelle Branch, "Perfect Storm" from Sammi Morelli, Dylan McDonald & The Avians with "She Really Burns Me Up" and three artists who had more than one single getting heavy airplay; Eytan Mirsky ("Split In Two", "What You Don't Want", "The Weed In Your Garden" and "Everybody Wants Something"), Katy Perry ("Firework", "The One That Got Away" and "Last Friday Night") and the return of Emitt Rhodes ("Just Me And You", "This Wall Between Us" and "What's A Man To Do").

Other singles from artists making an impact over Maui's airwaves included Vinnie Zummo's "Didn't Get The Memo", ""Erica The Beautiful" by Agony Aunts featuring Marty Rudnick, dance diva Rikah's updated "Missing (2012)" originally from Everything But The Girl, Taylor Swift's "Mean", Melissa Otero's "Angels and Demons", "Transamerica Pyramid" by The Corner Laughers, "Darlene" from John Hunter Phillips, Maxi and Marty's cover of The Rooftop Singers 1963 number one hit "Walk Right In", "The Edge Of Glory" from Lady Gaga featuring Clarence Clemons, Tam Duong's "In The Elevator", Starr Saunders with "We Were One", Emmaline's "Swim To You" and two versions of "Saturday Delight" recorded originally by Ray Powers and given a new arrangement by Mike Fornatale. The Time Machine had a number of musical guests in 2011 and guest disc jockeys including singer-songwriter Kyle Vincent. Songwriter Elizabeth Racz, responsible for a handful of collaborations with artists that resulted in indie singles (the above mentioned songs from Vinnie Zummo, Tam Duong, Ray Powers and Mike Fornatale plus Maxi Dunn from 2010 and again in 2011), broke the guest DJ record by filling in a number of times for the vacationing radio hosts Summer Blue and Michael McCartney.

2011 also continued for the third year in a row as "The Year of Shave Ice" for The Time Machine Crew, including one our of own disc jockeys spending most of the year during the weekends, behind the counter serving shave ice...but that's a story for another time.

The albums below are actual titles that were released in 2011 that dominated our playlists.

2008 had nearly seventy albums with that number cut in half for 2009. 2010 had a large number of spins for fifty albums but the amount of music being released in 2011 brought the number of albums back up to seventy for 2011's final list of The Time Machine's most played albums on the air in no particular ranking outside of the first fifteen selections.

Let's kick it off with the fifteen most played albums hands down over any other this past year on "The Time Machine"...we were pleased to see that these albums all tied at the number one spot but be aware that the remaining albums on this list were only about one or two spins away from getting into the tied position so it's really amazing that we got to play all of these artist so heavily in rotation for the year. 2011 was an awesome year for music! Don't let anyone tell you different.

Baby Come Find Me At Christmas (On The Time Machine)

On this Christmas Eve, The Time Machine Crew found themselves having a wonderful time on the air sharing brand new Christmas songs and holiday tunes from the past that began with our traditional airplay of "On Christmas Eve" from Andrew Gold. The Time Machine lost a musical friend in the passing of Andrew, as did the world of entertainment, and this Christmas may have brought us tears but Andrew's music will continue to uplift generations of music lovers for years to come. The highlight of the program were the many musical artists who joined the radio broadcast to share their stories from Christmas past and present including Schuyler Fisk, Dan Wilson, Dave Stephens, Meiko, Michael Damian, Tia Carrere, Mike Viola, Anya Marina, Kyle Vincent, Rachael Yamagata, Rachael Teo, Rick Hromadka from Maple Mars, Alicia Witt, Neil Sedaka, Lisa Donnelly, Jeremy Lister, Lannie Flowers, Zac Anthony of The Wellingtons, Maxi Dunn, Sheva Solomon, Sammi Morelli, Andrea Perry, Rob Bonfiglio and Ian Lloyd.

Summer Blue along with producers Jenny Leong, Daphne Matsumoto and Ashley Starr kept the Time Machine Christmas tradition with DJ Deron Furukawa's bake-a-thon that also included Kit Zulueta's skill with the ingredients that resulted in him stopping by during the broadcast immediately after letting the cookies cool out of the oven. Plus the added bonus of DJs Adam Waltemire and Jay J along with actress/singer-songwriter Mandy Moore and former windsurfing pro Sonja Evensen made the broadcast complete. Sonja windsurfed across the Molokai Channel not just one time but three separate journeys, "Once out of curiosity, once for a race, and once for transportation."

The Time Machine also featured three brand new Christmas songs from Marcella Detroit, Shonen Knife and Mimi Betinis. Joining both Marcella Detroit and Mimi Betinis with a worldwide broadcast debut last week was the reworking of the holiday classic "Winter Wonderland" into an island vibe just for Maui were Pamela Polland and Doc Roberts with "Maui Wonderland". The Time Machine Radio Crew were honored to feature these songs for the first time on the radio including "Keep A Light" from The Wellspring. The duo of Talia Osteen and Dov Rosenblatt will be releasing the upcoming album from The Wellspring in the Spring of 2012. Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM radio aircheck include; The Smith Bros., Hanson, Butterfly Boucher, FM Radio, Albert Brooks & Little Kristi, Cliff Hillis, Candy Butchers, Randy Bachman, Mike Nichols & Elaine May, Bob Dylan and Bleu.

Steve Miller Interview on The Time Machine

Rock legend Steve Miller was a guest on The Time Machine. The Steve Miller Band will be performing this Sunday evening at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center with singer-songwriter Dave Mason opening up the concert. Steve discussed his latest album "Let Your Hair Down" along with stories behind some of his classic songs. Steve also shared with radio host Michael McCartney and the Maui radio audience his heartfelt thoughts on Les Paul and Norton Buffalo plus his time spent with The Beatles. In addition to his 2005 arrangement of his 1976 hit "Fly Like An Eagle" with Les Paul, his latest collaboration with William Shatner and Brad Paisley covering his classic "Space Cowboy" can also be heard on this FM aircheck.

Michael Damian Returns To The Director's Chair With "A Princess For Christmas"

Director, producer, writer, actor and musician Michael Damian was a recent guest on The Time Machine. The director's latest film for the holidays "A Princess For Christmas" is featured throughout the month of December on The Hallmark Channel. The film's lead characters portrayed by Katie McGrath, Sam Heughan and Roger Moore along with the entire supporting cast make this a holiday film for the entire family. The director's previous films all co-written and co-produced by Janeen Damian; "Flicka 2" starring Patrick Warburton, Tammin Sursok and Clint Black ("Flicka 3" just wrapped up shooting), "Marley & Me: The Puppy Years" (starring Travis Turner, Donnelly Rhodes and Merrilyn Gann), "Hot Tamale" (With John Hayden, Richard Riehle, Jason Priestley and Harland Williams) and "Moondance Alexander" starring Kay Panabaker, Don Johnson, Lori Loughlin and Sasha Cohen had a successful theatrical run and all films have been released on DVD. In addition to discussing the film, Michael also shared his behind the scenes moments with actor Sir Roger Moore and his next motion picture "Confections of a Discarded Woman" currently in pre-production.

In addition to Michael Damian's number one record "Rock On" and his holiday tune "Christmas Time Without You", brand new music is featured from Fountains Of Wayne, Jim Bianco, Rachael Yamagata and Schuyler Fisk. Dan Mayer Interview on The Time Machine Discussing the Musical Return of Emitt Rhodes

Musician Dan Mayer was a guest on The Time Machine and shared three brand new songs from the highly influential singer-songwriter Emitt Rhodes. Emitt got his start as the drummer of Palace Guard before forming The Merry-Go-Round in the mid-sixties. Emitt's music career has been a part of The Time Machine's playlist for a few decades since the inception of the radio broadcast and his songs are considered timeless classics and has landed Emitt status as a "core artist" to the format. It's been a decade since his engineering and production contribution to Ray Paul's cover of Paul McCartney's "Oh Woman, Oh Why" was in heavy rotation on the Maui FM dial so it's nice to hear some brand new music from this extremely talented artist (Ray Paul also had heavy airplay on Maui for nearly a year with his recent cover of Emitt's song " 'Til The Day After").

For the past two years, Dan and Emitt have kept The Time Machine Crew up to date upon Emitt's return into the recording studio with brand new songs to capture on tape with a new band. In addition to guitarist and singer-songwriter Dan Mayer, Emitt is joined by the co-founder of The Grass Roots and The Merry-Go-Round's drummer Joel Larson, co-founder and former bassist for Counting Crows, Matt Malley, and guitarist Jim Rolfe. Icing on the musical cake comes from legendary guitarist Richard Thompson, whose band Fairport Convention covered Emitt's song "Time Will Show the Wiser" in 1967. Richard performs on the three songs heard on the broadcast plus Debbi Peterson and Vicki Peterson from The Bangles, who covered "Live" on their debut album on Columbia Records, which is one of Emitt's song from his Merry-Go-Round days.

Emitt was also the subject matter of Italian director Cosimo Messeri's documentary "The One Man Beatles". The film was about Emitt Rhodes's vicissitudes: life, past, present, troubles and hopes. The movie was selected for the International Rome Film Festival 2009 and was nominated for the David di Donatello Award as Best Documentary of 2010.

The Time Machine Crew were honored to give three new songs from Emitt Rhodes their world broadcast debut. The song titles heard anywhere for the very first time for this early November aircheck are listed below:

Ian Lloyd Interview on The Time Machine

Rocker Ian Lloyd was a guest on The Time Machine last week. From the band Stories that gave the seventies one of the coolest radio hits ("Brother Louie") to his solo career and numerous projects including Social Hero, Ian had never recorded a Christmas song. The Maui FM dial was treated to the first official Christmas song of the season (And a week before Halloween - a first for The Time Machine). In addition to sharing the new rocking yuletide song "Everybody's Happy 'Cause It's Christmas Time", Ian also discussed his musical career.

Brand new songs were also featured from Vinnie Zummo ("Didn't Get The Memo"), Tam Duong ("In The Elevator"), John Hunter Phillips (Dennis, Carl, Alan, Brian, Bruce and Mike") Strangefinger ("I Feel Fine") plus Sara Bareilles, The Wellingtons, Michelle Branch and The Outfield. Aaron Yeger Interview on The Time Machine

Director Aaron Yeger was a guest on The Time Machine today. Aaron is in town for the United States film premiere of his documentary "A People Uncounted" at the Hawaii International Film Festival. It debuted last Friday evening and will have another screening on this Wednesday at 4PM at Honolulu's Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Theatres & IMAX. This year’s festival includes 212 films from 43 countries.

The feature documentary with Nuance Pictures and Urbinder Documentaries is about the genocide of the Romani people during the Holocaust and their continuing marginalization and persecution in present day. This year at the Hawaii International Film Festival, the documentary has been nominated for the Halekulani Golden Orchid Award for Documentary Feature. The Roma have endured centuries of intolerance and persecution in Europe, most notably during the Holocaust, when an estimated 500,000 or more were murdered. "A People Uncounted" documents their culturally rich yet often difficult lives, and demonstrates how their present state has been deeply shaped by the tragedies of the past.

This is the first feature-length film for director Aaron Yeger, producers Marc Swenker and Tom Rasky, and executive producer Lenny Binder. The film grew from a conversation between Rasky and Binder, both children of Holocaust survivors and their mutual friend, award-winning Romani musician Robi Botos, who went on to score the film. The film is edited by A.C.E. award-winning documentary filmmaker Kurt Engfehr (Fahrenheit 911, Bowling for Columbine).

Filmed in 11 countries and featuring dozens of Roma—including Holocaust survivors, historians, activists and musicians—A People Uncounted brings the Romani history to life through the rich interplay of their poetry, music, and compelling first-hand accounts. As ethnic intolerance flares up once again across Europe, "A People Uncounted" sheds light on this unique culture while placing the Romani story within the larger context of the world’s legacy of racism and genocide.

Aaron Yeger also discussed his upcoming projects including the role of co-director with Marc Swenker for "Chasing the King", a feature documentary about Chuck Berry and a quest for the real King of Rock and Roll, as well as a producer of "Fantastico!" a feature documentary about the rise of new Canadian fashion icon Bruno Ierullo.

Aaron Yeger graduated from Ryerson University's School of Image Arts with a specialization in Film Production, where he received a number of awards including the Norman Jewison Filmmaker Award, the Harvey Hart Award for Directing, the J. L. Beaton Award for academic distinction, and two Universal Studios Scholarships in Filmmaking. The Time Machine Crew were honored to have a film maker of Aaron's caliber on the broadcast.

New music heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast features artists Sarina Paris, Mike Viola and Rachael Yamagata.

Rachael Yamagata Comes With Tales From "Chesapeake" On The Time Machine

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata returned to The Time Machine with her self released album "Chesapeake". She put together her dream team of musicians for her third record. The band included Victor Indrizzo, Mike Viola, Michael Chaves, Kevin Salem, Tom Freund and Oli Kraus. John Alagia returned as producer to capture it all and the magic on this album is heard from beginning to end.

It's always a treat for The Time Machine Radio Crew to have Rachael on the broadcast as a guest. Rachael's vocals have graced Maui's FM dial for years as she continued to keep busy between each of her albums by co-writing and singing on albums of other artists. The list is long and varied; Duncan Sheik, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Robin Danar, Mike Viola, Margaret Cho, Toots & The Maytals, Ben Lee, Graham Colton, Katherine McPhee, Rhett Miller, John Francis, Jill Cunniff, Dan Wilson, Bill Deasey, Ray LaMontagne, Chris Holmes, Ben Arthur, Jason Mraz, Bright Eyes and Mandy Moore...with so many music projects outside of her own, it appears that she will continue to be on our playlists for years to come (and hopefully we'll get a chance to hear her unreleased EP with Mike Viola of which three of the songs on the new album were originally written for).

Her debut release "Happenstance" produced by John Alagia kept pulling in our listeners and locking her status as "most played artist" right up until the end of 2007. Perfect timing for us because her sophomore double album release "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" was released in 2008. That album was produced by Mike Mogis (with a couple of songs produced by John Alagia) and it was an album worth the wait filled with many talented musicians like Kevin Salem, Michael Chaves, Daniel Clarke and Mark Goldenberg adding their musical gifts to the project.

Rachael's music has had a home on our playlists and in our hearts since her debut release. Be sure to pick up a copy of her first album, "Happenstance" and her second, "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart". Rachael currently topped our airplay chart for 2010 with her song with Semisonic's Dan Wilson, "You Take My Troubles Away" and closed out the year with her yuletide song, "Baby Come Find Me At Christmas". This past year, "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday", Rachael's cover of the classic song from The Muppets where Gonzo sang around a campfire in 1979's "The Muppet Movie" has been embraced by The Time Machine staff and listeners to make it one of the most played songs of the year. The song saw its official release on Disney's tribute album "The Muppets: The Green Album" on August 23rd in preparation for Disney's November release of the Jason Segel film "The Muppet Movie". Other artists featured along with Rachael include; Weezer & Paramore’s Hayley Williams, OK Go, Sondre Lerche, Andrew Bird, Matt Nathanson, The Fray and My Morning Jacket.

Rachael's work with Ben Arthur and John Francis are featured on the broadcast. New music also featured on this aircheck include three wonderful covers from Maxi Dunn & Marty Rudnick with "Walk Right In", "Sweet And Tender Romance" from The Bangles and Joe Algeri & Maria Sokratis performing "Jackson". Starr Saunders Returns To The Time Machine

Singer-songwriter Starr Saunders returned to The Time Machine as a musical guest. Starr's first appearance on the broadcast dates back to her first album release "Intro" in 2004 under the name of The Starr Saunders Project followed by "City Of Dreams" in 2005. Starr shared her latest single "We Were One" which is now available on iTunes. Starr collaborated with songwriter Robert Lindsey on this song which just a little musical taste of what's to come on her upcoming album.

Singer-songwriter Schuyler Fisk was a guest on The Time Machine last week to discuss her second album "Blue Ribbon Winner". The first album from the talented artist, "The Good Stuff", ended up being one of the most played albums for the year 2009 on The Time Machine due to fine songwriting and performances on songs like "Afterglow" and "Miss You". Maui's FM dial embraced Schuyler Fisk and The Time Machine Crew were thrilled to have her on the radio as a musical guest.

In addition to her musical chops (which includes her duo project FM Radio with Tim Myers of One Republic), Schuyler is an accomplished actor with a number of film and television roles. She can currently be seen in Gus Van Sant's latest motion picture "Restless".

Singer-songwriter Mike Viola has unleashed his latest album "Electro De Perfecto". The extremely gifted and prolific artist returned as a guest on The Time Machine last week. Mike's music has long been on our playlists since the nineties. From his own Candy Butchers to film soundtrack work on "That Thing You Do!", "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" and "Get Him To The Greek" to his involvement with L.E.O. and The Major Labels, Viola has continued to win our audience over with catchy melodies and killer hooks. Mike has also produced some wonderful artists that have graced our airwaves the past few years like Kelly Jones, Mandy Moore, Rachael Yamagata and Marissa Levy.

Willie K. Interview on The Time Machine

One of the most celebrated and talented singer-songwriters to emerge from Hawaii in the eighties and make a name for himself as one of Hawaii's top entertainers around the world is Willie K. Throughout the nineties and the turn of the century, Willie Kahaiali’i redefined the music scene in Hawaii. Willie was a guest on The Time Machine last week and shared his thoughts behind his latest blues masterpiece "Warehouse Blues". With numerous albums under his artistic belt along with outside musical projects like the successful duo The Barefoot Natives (with Eric Gilliom) and Amy Hanaiali’i, the guitar virtuoso discussed his career with radio host Michael McCartney and hints at what may be ahead.

The band members on "Warehouse Blues" are some of Maui's finest musicians; Jerry Byers on bass guitar, Kris Thomas on drums, percussionist Mio "Timbolero" Flores and Tam Sugayan on congas. Playing the killer electric guitar on "Nasty Thing" is Avi Ronen who is featured as a special guest musician on the album along with Howard Eisenberg on saxophone and Sam Ahia, Sr. performs the jazz guitar on "Lonely Man". While Willie bent those guitar strings and sang his heart out, Jesse Alpuro and Nick Fournier engineered the album. Nick Fournier also mixed the album with Jonathan Starr and it was mastered by John Scrip. A collaborative effort to bring the artistic style of Willie K to the ears of global music fans appreciative of the blues.

On Maui, this Sunday October 16th, there will be an album release party for Willie K's album "Warehouse Blues" to coincide with the opening of the new Maui Tribe location at 270 Waiehu Beach Road in Wailuku. Maui Tribe is hosting “A Grand Celebration Willie K Style” and it also happens to be Willie’s birthday celebration. Come down and join in on the fun from 12 Noon to 4PM for good times and great music.

Singer-songwriter and slack key master Makana was our guest on The Time Machine. Makana is on Maui for a concert tonight at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. He performed live with Kathy Collins on KEAO and spoke with Michael McCartney on KPMW WILD 105.5 yesterday. Makana returned to The Time Machine this morning on KRKH 97.3 FM to discuss his music and shared two songs that will only be available on CD at his 7:30PM concert (Doors open at 5:30PM with Lily Meola & Toby Couture as the opening act). In addition to covering Led Zeppelin's "Going To California" in what he terms his "Slack Rock" style, he also gave The Time Machine crew the green light to spin his arrangement of the theme to "Hawaii Five-0".

The Yardbirds are coming to Maui to perform on September 16th and The Time Machine Crew was ecstatic to have Jim McCarty as a guest. In addition to his own solo works, forming the bands Renaissance and Illusion, Jim was one of the founding members of the highly influential sixties rock group The Yardbirds currently on tour along with original co-founder Chris Dreja. Jim discussed the band's first tour to Hawaii, his early influences and the story behind his song "For Eloise" from his 2009 album "Sitting On The Top Of Time".

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata returns to The Time Machine with a sneak listen to her forthcoming album "Chesapeake". The album is set to be self-released by Rachael herself this October. After her debut album "Happenstance" on RCA (Sony BMG) and her second double album "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" on Warner Brothers, this around with this album, she is on her own. Rachael shares the behind the scenes process in releasing her third album and how you can be involved. Before the sun rose at Chesapeake Bay a little after 4AM, Rachael sat on the front porch of producer John Alagia's home, "I’ve just woken up from another end of the world dream where Bon Jovi was an alien planting explosive devices in cupboards that eventually cause massive flooding when I decide I need to do a morning coffee run (ok, I need cigarettes) so I grab my keys and head to town. Erob (Eric Robinson), our engineer, is just going to bed after working late on a vox comp for ‘You Won’t Let Me’ and it occurs to me how I’ve truly lucked out with the people involved in this next record."

"I am in the studio. And when I say studio, I mean Alagia’s house that we’ve spent weeks reconverting into a studio – shipped gear, borrowed microphones, amps, guitars, a grand piano that is living in his bedroom because that’s where we get the best sound, vox mics that are housed in his shower for some natural reverb and of course the porch where I write this – a past scene of pre production jams complete with drums made out of cardboard beer cases and recycling bins, cellos stuck in wads of duck tape so as not to slip on the floor, a wurly set up by the table of receipts I’m calling ‘my office’ etc. I packed my car what seems like months ago chock full of air mattresses, giant breakfast skillets, keyboards, snow boots (unusable) and of course my diva tent – an 8 person banana yellow monstrosity that I’ve been sleeping in for some time now to carve out a little private space for moi as well as leave room for the house full of amazing musicians that have come to play."

"There have been rounds of plumbers and air conditioner technicians, trips to Target for the inflatable pool that has since garnered a crop circle impression on the lawn for a mere $79.95, and thank you dad for the grill donation – let there be burgers."

"The cast is my dream team, the kind that has taken years to find and have histories with. We’ve been saying ‘there’s a lot of love in the room’ and there must be because schedules have been routed, carpools arranged – anything to help a girl now financing her own career full throttle. Victor Indrizzo has a week off from Sheryl Crow’s tour and when he’s not doing the dishes has laid down some of the most bad ass drum tracks that I’ve ever heard. Mike Viola (Candy Butchers, Walk Hard, Get Him To The Greek) has already tracked harmonies to rival The Beach Boys and The Carpenters and truth be told wears sunglasses in his pajamas. Michael Chaves (John Mayer, Five For Fighting) is the guru of vibe on guitar, only wears black and insists on sleeping on the couch as if it’s the best room in the house. Kevin Salem (Dumptruck, Yo la Tengo) is still doing additional tracks he dreams up between producing underground Pakistinian superstars as well as shuttling English cellist Oli Kraus (Sia, Duffy) down from NYC – the same cellist I once leaned over to my friend at a Beth Orton concert 8 years ago saying ‘someday I’ll have strings like that’, but that’s another story… And of course Tom Freund who will forever be known as Starfish for the way he spreads out in a bed – not that grown men are sharing beds here or anything. He can make you cry when he plays upright."

"There is no label, no A&R and I’m pretty sure the artwork for this record will come down to the I phone app that works wonders on pictures and the stash of cash that Dad put away for my wedding has been put to use here along with whatever frequent flyer miles I knew I’d use someday. I’m about to launch my PLEDGE campaign, which a psychic recently told me was karmic, as well as form my own independent team of folk to get this record out. And yet, I must say it is all going along swimmingly. The reunion with Alagia and the people in the room have been on instinct the best contribution I’ve made to this entire process. Viola, Kevin and Chaves have all been in the driver’s seat for some of my recordings and who knew you could get multiple producers in the room with no trace of ego whatsoever. It is Big Pink and the drums are set up in the kitchen, it fulfills every idea of ‘camp’ and when the band decides one track out of ten didn’t feel at the right tempo they will recut it 3 hours before their morning flight because they care so much.. I am in a constant state of Faklempt and the looseness of this whole shebang made a perfect transition into creative spontaneity that I think is going to surprise many. We had a mid point listening party bbq tonight where one person said to me that the songs sound like I’m in control of my own life now and I think she is right. It’s still too early to know what this record will become, but it’s been made with a lot of love in the room (and tequila) and like the frankenfish who can swim and walk on land is suprising the hell outta me."

As always, it's a treat for The Time Machine Radio Crew to have Rachael on the broadcast as a guest. Rachael's vocals have graced Maui's FM dial for years as she continued to keep busy between each of her albums by co-writing and singing on albums of other artists. The list is long and varied; Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Robin Danar, Mike Viola, Margaret Cho, Toots & The Maytalls, Ben Lee, Graham Colton, Katherine McPhee, Rhett Miller, John Francis, Jill Cunniff, Dan Wilson, Bill Deasey, Ray LaMontagne, Chris Holmes, Ben Arthur, Jason Mraz, Bright Eyes and Mandy Moore...with so many music projects outside of her own, it appears that she will continue to be on our playlists for years to come (and hopefully we'll get a chance to hear her unreleased EP with Mike Viola).

Her debut release "Happenstance" produced by John Alagia kept pulling in our listeners and locking her status as "most played artist" right up until the end of 2007. Perfect timing for us because her sophomore double album release "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" was released in 2008. That album was produced by Mike Mogis (with a couple of songs produced by John Alagia) and it was an album worth the wait filled with many talented musicians like Kevin Salem, Michael Chaves, Daniel Clarke and Mark Goldenberg adding their musical gifts to the project. Now "Chesapeake" has John Alagia producing again along with the return of musicians Michael Chaves and Kevin Salem plus Victor Indrizzo, Oli Kraus and Mike Viola.

Rachael's music has had a home on our playlists and in our hearts since her debut release. While waiting for her third album release this October, be sure to pick up a copy of her first album, "Happenstance" and her second, "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart". Rachael currently topped our airplay chart for 2010 with her song with Semisonic's Dan Wilson, "You Take My Troubles Away" and closed out the year with her yuletide song, "Baby Come Find Me At Christmas". This past year, "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday", Rachael's cover of the classic song from The Muppets where Gonzo sang around a campfire in 1979's "The Muppet Movie" has been embraced by The Time Machine staff and listeners to make it one of the most played songs of the year. The song sees its official release on Disney's tribute album "The Muppets: The Green Album" next week Tuesday (August 23rd) in preparation for Disney's November release of the Jason Segel film "The Muppet Movie". 11L Radio New York International's radio host Dave Boogieman of "Power Pop Plus", along with his radio sidekick Barry Dreyfus, had singer-songwriters Ray Powers and Michael Zuko on as musical guests last week. Imagine our surprise when Ray Powers performed a song that he co-wrote with songwriter Elizabeth Racz about our little rinky dink radio show out here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It's called "Saturday Delight" and made it's broadcast debut on The Time Machine radio show during Easter Weekend last April. Fast forward three months later and Ray Powers is joined by musician Michael Zuko to perform the song live on Boogieman's radio show from New York.

After numerous appearances the past few years as our featured guest artist and guest DJ, rocker and singer-songwriter Dave Stephens returned to The Time Machine with his third album release "Time Will Tell". Going in an old school FM direction, The Time Machine featured the album played in its entirety, three times over the past year. This time around, Dave Stephens drops in at the beginning of the album to discuss his record. The Time Machine's radio show host, Michael McCartney, treated this broadcast as a listening party and stopped in the middle of the album to "flip the record over" and talk with Dave about his music and again at the end of the album.

The Red Button Returns To The Time Machine

With a quote like that, you can understand why The Red Button have been a musical staple on the playlists of The Time Machine the last four years. Singer-songwriters Mike Ruekberg and Seth Swirsky are the multi-talented duo behind The Red Button. Their debut album "She's About To Cross My Mind" is filled with so many musical gems that the album became one of our most played albums on the air for 2007. Now their follow up "As Far As Yesterday Goes" has been released and the refreshingly retro collaboration showcases the duo's shared passion for the juicy melodies and catchy hooks of the pop music of the ’60s and ’70s, yet still crackle with present day energy. You will not be able to resist the urge to sing along like The Time Machine Crew does in the radio station, so it was nice to have both Seth Swirsky and Mike Ruekberg share their thoughts on their sophomore release.

Mike Ruekberg’s indie credentials are rock solid: He spent the ’90s as writer and singer for Minneapolis-based pop heroes Rex Daisy, who recorded a CD for Geffen Records with producer Paul Fox. He also wrote the soundtrack for the indie cult film classic “Dummy”, which starred Adrien Brody, Milla Jovovich, and Vera Farmiga. Mike’s music has also been heard in other movies and on TV, as well as in football stadiums and blaring from audio greeting cards.

In addition to The Red Button, Seth Swirsky has his own solo work and many records composed for other artists like; Rufus Wainwright, Taylor Dayne, Al Green, Jane Weidlin, Michael McDonald, Celine Dion, The Poppies, Xscape, Olivia Newton-John, Charles & Eddie, Smokey Robinson, Brenda K. Starr, Trey Lorenz, Bonfire, Air Supply, Faith Evans and Tina Turner. In addition to getting the chance to compose songs with Eric Carmen, Seth is also a published best selling author ("Baseball Letters" from 1996, "Every Pitcher Tells A Story" from 1999 and "Something To Write Home About" from 2003) and a film maker. His documentary film "Beatles Stories" is currently screening at film festivals around the globe and consists of interviews he had done with his hand-held camera with people who had a story about themselves and The Beatles. It was originally going to be titled ""A Year In The Life" but it’s not a “tribute” or “anthology” piece, according to Seth, just people from all walks of life with a neat, specific Beatles story.

As a solo artist, his first album, "Instant Pleasure", won for Best Pop Album at the 2005 L.A. Music Awards. His follow-up, "Watercolor Day", won Best Pop Song (the title track) at the 2010 Hollywood Music and Media Awards.

The two met in 2005 and hit it off immediately; both of them admiring the songs of each other and sharing a taste for vintage pop.

So, they got together and started writing and recording songs. They found that Seth’s tuneful optimism balanced nicely with Mike’s pessimistic but passionate style. Their first album “She’s About to Cross My Mind”, in 2007, was the result of those sessions and the new album clearly demonstrates that the craft of songwriting and performing in the studio can result in an album that you just can't get enough of.

The Time Machine Crew decided that it might be a good idea to have an album listening party and hear the songs in the order that they were placed on the record. In fact, two albums sounded like an even better idea, so with a three hour afternoon airshift to fill with killer tunes, radio host Michael McCartney started off the broadcast with Seth Swirsky's album "Watercolor Day" along with Seth discussing the music and his film followed by Mike Ruekberg joining the album listening party for The Red Button's brand new record "As Far As Yesterday Goes".

Todd's hand in many hit records made him a highly sought after producer while busy working on his own music.

Singer-songwriter Alicia Witt returned to The Time Machine radio broadcast to share the inspiration behind her latest single "Me Or New York". Alicia released a self titled EP produced by Matt Beckley that become one of our most played on the air for the year 2010 and it was wonderful to have her on once again as a guest to discuss her music.

She also discussed her latest role in the film "The Pond" written and directed by Dan Hannon. The short film was featured at the 2011 Maui Film Festival and also featured the acting talents of David Morse, Todd Rotondi and Bill Conner.

Singer-songwriter Sheri Miller returned to The Time Machine with a brand new record to share with the Maui radio audience. For her second release "Winning Hand"; Sheri enlisted legendary musicians Will Lee (Fab Faux, Paul Shaffer's CBS Orchestra on "Letterman"), Charley Drayton (Fiona Apple, Divinyls, X-Pensive Winos) and Gerry Leonard (David Bowie, Suzanne Vega, Duncan Sheik), to get the artistic, poetic, and super-catchy songs of “Winning Hand” take shape for another winner collection of songs. Capturing it all in the studio was producer Kevin Killen (U2, Peter Gabriel).

Singer-songwriter Joy Valencia was a recent guest on The Time Machine. In August of 2010, radio host Adam Waltemire, released an album to coincide with his radio show's concert tour, that had already taken place on the East coast and was making a concert debut on the West coast. The three time Golden Globe nominee and Tony Award nominated actor has released his fifth album "Keep It Right Here" featuring Brad Phillips & Dominic John Davis. The talented mandolin and fiddle player Brad Phillips brings his craft to the album and bassist Dominic John Davis completes the overall sound of the record. Jeff has been a guest on the broadcast a number of times over the years and has been an audience favorite since his first album. The Time Machine Crew were excited to have Jeff return to the Hawaiian airwaves (considering that his first TV acting gig was on "Hawaii Five-0" - the radio staff has always had a place in their hearts for the career of Jeff Daniels).

With this fifth album release and the previous four albums (two of which are live performance albums), along with the last few years of sold out concerts, all proceeds go straight to the Purple Rose Theatre Company.

Jeff has four concert performances scheduled for this August but this March 19th is his last concert date until late summer. The show is in Brighton, Michigan at the Brighton Center For the Performing Arts. The Saturday evening performance begins at 8PM and tickets can be obtained at(586)556-3306.

Another Maui Valentine Broadcast

The Time Machine Crew played another batch of songs for Valentine's Day which was kicked off with singer-songwriter Courtney Jaye. The usual musical suspects were given spins on tunes about finding love, losing love, upset about love, excited about the promise of love, making love and the numerous complications that go with it.

The Time Machine's producer, Jenny Leong, kept her hands near the censor switch just in case the air talent got out of control over the FM airwaves. Radio hosts Daphne Matsumoto, Summer Blue and Michael McCartney kept the music flowing including brand new songs from Mike Viola, Kelly Jones and a duet between Vegas With Randolph and Maxi Dunn.

Valentine's day, to me, is sort of like New Year's Eve...it never turns out to be what my fantasizing little self of seventeen expects. However, I do find myself loving friendships, travel, music, creativity and hey, if there can be a little romance mixed in all the better. If you've got a cutie, go out and celebrate! And if you don't... stay light and know that it's all on it's way... Somehow.. Someday.. (If i can do it, you can too!)

Singer-songwriter Alicia Witt released a self titled EP that become one of our most played on the air for the year 2010 and it was wonderful to have her on as a guest to discuss her music.

Alicia shared with the radio audience what served as musical inspiration for her songs and included her take on covering Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al". The EP was produced by Matt Beckley and this radio program also includes two live performances from Alicia.

The Time Machine Crew appreciated the time that Alicia took to do the interview because her studio cohort Blue (previous musical guest on The Time Machine) was standing by in the studio just a few feet away to work on some more songs for Alicia's next musical project.

Rocker and singer-songwriter Lisa Burns was also on the same broadcast of The Time Machine. Lisa discussed the stories behind the music on her recent release "Channeling Mary".

Lisa also shared with the radio audience about her previous work including "Unadorned" from 2004, her debut single from 1978 and her musical influences including Mary Weiss and Jackie DeShannon.

Greg Laswell Covers Rachael Yamagata's "Worn Me Down" for The Voice Project

The Time Machine Crew were wondering for the last seven years who would tackle the artistic works of songsmith Rachael Yamagata. A strong singer-songwriter in his right, Greg Laswell, a friend of Rachael's did a wonderful performance of "Worn Me Down" for The Voice Project last September. Below is the video from the website and the words of introduction from The Voice Project:

Always that sense of excitement at the door, something new waiting just beyond. Greg buzzed us in and we met him halfway up the stairs to his sweet rooftop studio in Brooklyn. We were really excited to hear he was going to covering Rachael who was actually at Nikki and Oli's wedding when we first showed the video of the ladies in Gulu singing Suitcase to Joe Purdy. And to tie it all in even more, Oli actually played cello on the original album release of "Worn Me Down" from Rachael (Oli, we're coming for you too soon, you better have a song ready). Greg's soulful version seems to echo what he says right before, a quiet expression of admiration and love for the song and for his old friend.

Hanging With Mike Viola and Ducky Carlisle

Singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata , frequent musical guest on The Time Machine, chimes in for the new year after her third album just got pressed this weekend with a release date soon to be announced.

Just back from Boston after swell fabulouso recording session with Mike Viola and Ducky Carlisle. Got a movie track done that I’m excited about, for all it’s hymnal non pop glory will have a place in this world after all. Will let you in on further details bout that as I get them. We caught a vibe like a surfer catches waves so we stayed a day later and did two covers just for fun. I’ve decided I was meant to hit my hey day in the 70s so am waiting patiently for time to reverse itself and welcome me in.

Some words about the magic men. Viola is a bit of a musical genius with energy that can only be supplied by some other planet I’m longing to visit. He can play anything and when I say anything I mean all instruments, sing any melody and he’s damn fine behind a grill as well. We’ve written together many times and you will see some of our co works making their way out on the next record. He has a new mustache and therefore a new nickname (Luigi) and like a select few has become a mentor that supplies me with wisdom and guts as well as music.

Ducky. The other magic man. He turns the knobs and dials it in and switches the levels and presto I become a real voice. I don’t know how he does what he does, but there are some that just get me and my tone and my need to have some bourbon. He is one of the few that creates the right setting and says just enough, but not too much that allows me to sing the one takes and be in the moment and even love it after 20 listens and much habitual self deprecation. His studio is filled with creativity in every inch (lots of ducks of course), paintings, records, books, gear, trinkets etc and when I go to sleep in my flannel duck sheets I know that the next morning the coffee will be perfect, the dogs zen filled and imagination set loose for another great day.

I could go on and on about Paul (the string arranger guru that makes it all better), the fab quartet, the kick ass flautist Tim that blew our minds AGAIN and Penny who just makes everything better…

It’s been sooooo long since I’ve written and there is so much I want to say. Why this morning I have no idea.. I have the flu AGAIN and can’t sleep AGAIN and was thinking back to a time where there were no barriers to my brain and what I let out there for anyone interested to read. It’s always this balance of how much you want to tell and stay positive and not jinx etc., but at the end of the day as artist to friend how will you hear anything if I stay in my own brain forever? (whaaa is she talking bout – I have no idea…)

So hey – happy new year and merry late holidays. Enjoy the next two years because 2012 is the end. (watched Nostradamous special for 3 hours and those birds!??). Did I look up survival guides 2012 on amazon.com ok so maybe I did so what. The reviews of those books are hilarious.. Someone actually marveled that a book was so negative. I’m not sure how you put a positive spin on the end of the world, but in fact there was one book saying how to make it fun as well.

‘Career wise’, since this is a catch up blog of sorts – has been a continual ride. Had amazing session with another of the greats - Joe Chiccarelli – over the summer and a cast of insane musicians that truly turned songs I was scratching my head about into fab works. He forced me to become a better singer and did some serious ass kicking that led to me dedicating myself to actually learn how to play the piano and take better care of my voice. These are very good things. He is a sensitive zen master that is just a true joy and boy if this blog isn’t becoming a love letter to the men in this little girl’s life (reference to oldie song – you get it? You get it?).

Perry I miss you. If ever there was a guide to give me renewed confidence in what makes me love the diamond in the rough songs and remember who I am and how to get there….

Alrighty, it’s late and I’ve gone on and on. The basics are – I’m still writing, I’m recording. I am doing everything I can to get you new songs through the web of label shifting and 2012 preparations (wink). There are silver linings – enter Kate. I have a show later this month in South Korea ( I could start in on the irony there, but that would take up too much space) and am setting up a residency for wood lovers to regain some chops and flesh out some songs before a proper tour. I am positively positive in my way. I’ve died my hair red, but it didn’t work and am still a cat lady (5 currently – 2 are visitors). I miss the road. I miss all of you.

Samantha Hale and Amanda Taulere Interviews on The Time Machine

Director Samantha Hale was a guest on The Time Machine to discuss her film "Map The Music". In addition to being a filmmaker; Samantha is a comedic alumna of Second City, granddaughter of The Skipper on Gilligan's Island and therefore genetically diseased to be an actor, and fervent music lover.

Samantha refers to herself as an accidental filmmaker. The documentary was triggered by the death of her father. It was her love and loss for her Dad along with her love of music that took on her journey around the country to try to explain the power that music has over people. She did this by following some of her favorite artists from concert to concert around the country and through interviews with legions of devoted fans and the incredible artists who inspire them, she tries to uncover the mystery behind the music while struggling with her loss. Artists include many of the core artists that are heard daily on The Time Machine; Imogen Heap, Kate Havnevik, Schuyler Fisk, Zoe Keating, Rachael Yamagata, Cary Brothers, Charlotte Martin and Jim Bianco. The film also features unreleased concert performances and behind the scenes footage with some of the most unique musicians in independent music.

Producer and director Amanda Taulere was also a guest on the broadcast. She discussed The Comedy Hui which is Maui's wacky character based comedy group.

On the set of NBC's sitcom "News Radio", Phil Hartman urged Amanda in the direction of improvisation and she trained at the prestigious Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles, where she has brought and trained their fantastic improvisational technique to Maui. The Groundlings technique consists of “pure” improvisation.

The cast of The Comedy Hui uses no props, sets or costumes in the show and relies completely on the power of pure imagination and suggestions from the audience much like the television show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”. The performance has the cast co-creating 90 minutes of excitement with the audience that keeps you on the edge of your seat and wondering, “How the heck to do they do that?!”. The Comedy Hui's current talented cast include; Rachel Deboer, Chino LaForge, Karen Stavash, Alexis Ziegler, John Ziegler and Justin Michael Banek along with musical director Francois Kie accompanied by John McMullen on drums.

The Time Machine's Most Played Albums Of 2010

It's the last day of 2010 and we decided to look back at our most played albums on the air for 2010. Everyone argued over a top ten or one hundred list because there were so many choices. We decided that instead of bickering over different music choices (and trust us...this is what we love to do...bicker about movies and music), we would present to you our most played albums on the air last year. This way there was no wiggle room for critical favorites. The funny part was that after the list was completed, everyone gathered around, smiled and agreed that these albums did fill our hearts and souls musically and that's all that matters in the end.

Alice Peacock's album "Love Remains" from 2009 along with "The Good Stuff" from Schuyler Fisk, Gail Swanson's "Simple Truth", Mark Hudson's "The Artist", "A Watched Pot" from Bleu, Anya Marina's "Slow and Steady Seduction: Phase II", "Under The Covers Vol. 2" from Susanna Hoffs & Matthew Sweet, and Mandy Moore's "Amanda Leigh" from the same year continued with heavy spins into 2010. Other carried over artists with heavy airplay into 2010 from 2009 included Anny Celsi, Kyle Vincent, Lisa Donnelly, Erin McCarley, Amy Hanaiali'i, Jason Falkner, Anuhea, The Throwdowns, Adrina Thorpe, James Carter Cathcart, Maxi Dunn and Diane Birch.

Still rolling along after over two years in heavy rotation was 2008's monster double album "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" from Rachael Yamagata and her songs dominated the airplay as did Anya Marina's "Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II" which we didn't realize at the time was not officially released until the following year and we were spinning an advance promo copy like the happy music campers that we are. The Time Machine Crew was honored to have the opportunity to share with our radio audience the wonderful songs off of "The Exotic Sounds Of Courtney Jaye" from Courtney Jaye for nearly two years before it surfaced for public consumption. The audience loves her style and the year 2010 finally saw the official CD and digital release of her self described "TropiCali sound" that is an incredible blend of country, California rock, Hawaiian music, folk and other genres that put together make up a sound that creates an atmosphere of pure pop bliss. Kelly Jones and her third album "SheBANG!" from 2008 also gave The Time Machine Crew plenty of musical joy on the airwaves for two solid years just in time to embrace her summer of 2010 duo release with Mike Viola titled "Melon". 2010's powerhouse singles and focus tracks also came on like gangbusters with Brian Ray's "I Found You" and "You Take My Troubles Away" from Rachael Yamagata & Dan Wilson followed by Michael Bublé's "Haven't Met You Yet" (returning from 2009 with even a heavier rotation the second time around), Farrah's "Swings & Roundabouts", "This Year's Gonna Be Our Year" by Eytan Mirsky, Palmdale's "Here Comes Summer", Dave Stephen's "Josephine", "Dirty Girl" from Parthenon Huxley & Kyle Vincent as the duo Huxley & Vincent, "Got Your Number" by My Eleventh Fantasy, "Best Actress" from Stratocruiser, Ray Paul paying tribute to Emitt Rhodes with a cover of "'Til The Day After", Brian Ray again with both "Saturday In The Sun" and "Happy Ending" along with Cee-Lo Green's "F*%@ You" bleeped filled catchy chorus filling the airwaves for the last five months only to be moved aside by the stinging digital single that was a Maxi Dunn & Elizabeth Racz collaboration simply titled "Why".

2010 also continued for the second year in a row as "The Year of Shave Ice" for The Time Machine Crew, including one our of own disc jockeys spending most of the year during the weekends, behind the counter serving shave ice...but that's a story for another time.

The albums below are actual titles that were released in 2010 that dominated our playlists.

2008 had nearly seventy albums with that number cut in half for 2009. 2010 had a large number of spins for fifty albums in no particular ranking outside of the first fifteen selections.

Let's kick it off with the fifteen most played albums hands down over any other this past year on "The Time Machine"...we were pleased to see that these albums all tied at the number one spot but be aware that the remaining albums on this list were only about one or two spins away from getting into the tied position so it's really amazing that we got to play all of these artist so heavily in rotation for the year. 2010 was an awesome year for music! Don't let anyone tell you different.

Jana officially kicked off our holiday radio programming with her song "I Hate The Holidays (But I Love Spending Them With You)" which she did the very same time last year when it was first released and her last single "Ballerina Of The Bowery" that's been in heavy rotation was also featured.

Rocker and singer-songwriter Eytan Mirsky also returned as a guest on The Time Machine. Eytan's been a part of our playlists the last ten years and it was a fun interview as he discussed the true story behind his latest single "I Bought Your Broken Teeth On eBay (Jena's Song)" as well as his song from earlier this year, "This Year's Gonna Be Our Year".

Brand new music was also featured from Bleu, Guster and the broadcast debut of Maple Mars with the first holiday single from the band, "Christmastime In The City". Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include; INXS, Hawks, Robert Gordon, Richard X. Maxi Dunn Drops By The Time Machine During The Holidays

Singer-songwriter Maxi Dunn returned as a guest on The Time Machine for a third time to discuss some of her songs from her album "Welcome To Soonville". She also shared with the radio audience that she has another album in the works with a release date for the spring of 2011. The last time that Maxi was on the broadcast, she served as guest DJ and this time around, Maxi shared her latest single "Why" which is collaboration with songwriter Elizabeth Racz and included the musical talents of Peter Hackett from Cult Of Wedge.

Three Dog Night Interview on The Time Machine

Cory Wells of Three Dog Night was a musical guest on The Time Machine before he joined co-founder Danny Hutton on stage for a Maui performance earlier this month. The legendary group have recorded the music of the best (and mostly undiscovered) new songwriters of their time including Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Elton John, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams and Hoyt Axton among many others. The group's eclectic taste, combined with their ability to recognize and record hits in a unique, distinctive and appealing style, resulted in the band dominating best-selling charts for years.

Three Dog Night is celebrating four decades in the music business and original band members Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards, guitarist Michael Allsup, guitarist Danny Hutton and guitarist Cory Wells are joined by Paul Kingery (Rick Springfield's "Working Class Dog" tour, Tiffany and Ronnie Law) on bass and Pat Bautz (Mickey Gilley, Freddy Fender, Everett Harp, Rodney Dangerfield, Dave Mason and Little Richard) on drums to complete the lineup that has been delighting audiences around the world. In addition to the classic hits that made the group a powerhouse on the radio charts and record sales charts, Cory also shared with the radio audience the stories behind Three Dog Night's latest song releases of "Prayer Of The Children" and "Heart Of Blues" including the broadcast debut of "867-5309/Jenny" and "Two Lights In The Night Time".

The Rubinoos and Zombie Night In Madrid

The Rubinoos were musical guests on The Time Machine this past week after celebrating their 40th Anniversary concert performance the previous weekend in San Francisco and Jon Rubin and Tommy Dunbar shared with the radio audience their experience of dealing with zombies which inspired the band's song "Zombie Night In Madrid". During the broadcast, this photograph of Tommy's neck about to be munched on was emailed to share with all of you. Drummer Donn Spindt and bassist Al Chan were both silent and may have been in the "turning" stage. Happy Halloween.

The Rubinoos Interview on The Time Machine

The Time Machine Crew were extremely excited to have The Rubinoos on as musical guests. The rock band's music had been a staple of The Time Machine's playlists for over thirty years. The group had just performed an anniversary concert in the San Fransisco Bay area less than a week earlier to celebrate the band's formation forty years ago. We were honored to have Jon Rubin, Tommy Dunbar and Al Chan on the broadcast plus drummer Donn Spindt joined our radio audience in The Time Machine's Radio Chat Room to answer questions and share his Rubinoos stories. 2010 was not only a banner year for The Rubinoos celebrating forty years as a band but it was the year that saw the release of two new albums. "Biff-Boff-Boing!" was a children's album that was released earlier this year and has been embraced by Pop lovin' adults. Their brand new album "Automatic Toaster" produced by Robbie Rist, who also slams the drums on the album along with some vocals, is everything a Rubes fan could musically desire. The Time Machine also extends a warm Aloha and Mahalo Nui Loa to Robbie Rist for making the songs available for airplay in Hawaii before the album was officially released.

The Time Machine's Executive Producer Jenny Leong and radio co-host Summer Blue were beside themselves and fainted numerous times during the show. That left host Michael McCartney constantly searching for smelling salts to revive both of them during songs that played between the interview segments which resulted in Michael doing the interview solo. Just imagine two women through the glass booth fanning themselves as if it were like Beatlemania had swept into the air studio. Rube-Mania! Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon radio broadcast include; Supertramp, The Smith Bros., The Laughing Dogs, Avril Lavigne and Farrah.

The day The Beatles called it quits was a dark day for me. The months and years that were to follow lead me in search of music that could bring the same thrill. I was hooked, and I needed another fix...bad.

The void left by the breakup resulted in a journey that would define a large part of my life. Immediately afterward, I began digging way deeper into the Beach Boys' catalog and soon became enchanted with the unimaginable genius of Brian Wilson. I had always been a Beach Boys fan, mind you, but in the sixties I was too obsessed with The Beatles to give them enough of my personal musical bandwidth.

While all my high school pals were moving forward to Jethro Tull and Led Zeppelin (admittedly, great bands), my musical tastes went off in a different direction. In addition to The Beach Boys, I began listening to Badfinger, The Hollies, The Raspberries, Emitt Rhodes and Todd Rundgren. I don't think they called it Powerpop in those days, but that's what I was into.

I was always "in search of", and a typical Saturday afternoon would usually include a trip to Tower Records, where one day in 1977, I discovered the debut album of The Rubinoos. Never heard of 'em. I'm not sure what impulse made me pick up the album, but I never looked back.

I got home, plopped the vinyl on the turntable and was instantly smitten. The LP included every ingredient for a Powerpop birthday cake, with icing and spreckles and candles that you can't blow out. Everything about it was world class: the songwriting, the vocal harmonies, the incredibly hooky guitar riffs, and that captivating feeling of joy you get when you hear a great pop song. The album was eclectic -- some songs were edgy, some were breezy and some showed a knack for irreverent charm and humor. It gets better. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, I was happy to learn that The Rubinoos hailed from Berkeley, and the entertainment section of the Sunday paper, I learned they were playing the following Friday at The Keystone Berkeley, a legendary rock club from the good old days. The live show was mind-blowing. Up on the stage were four lads, not looking old enough to be in a bar, and singing and playing with a musicality and effortlessness that seemed impossible for anybody that young.

On lead vocals was Jon Rubin (the Rubinoos name was actually a play on Buck Owens and The Buckaroos), with a pure soprano voice that even Eric Carmen would envy. Royse Ader was a tall, nordic-looking fellow who played bass ably and sang harmonies. Donn Spindt, a remarkably talented drummer, also sang harmonies. Their secret weapon was Tommy Dunbar, who played guitar like a world-class evil genius, wrote most of these wonderful pop songs, and whose between-song banter and mischievous smirk were eerily reminiscent of a young John Lennon.

Not unlike The Beatles, The Rubinoos possessed an irrepressible irreverence and charm that was spellbinding. In my opinion, it seemed like nothing would stop them from becoming the next big thing.

As often happens, I was wrong. As the rock music scene evolved in those days, it was essential that you MUST BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY (oooh!). Well, The Rubinoos threw that notion out the window with reckless disregard, and I applaud them for it. As legend has it, they once opened for Jefferson Starship at Winterland, and were booed off the statge for playing the Pepsi Generation song from the TV commercial. The Rubinoos were throwing a bit of comedy into their act, and the uptight San Francisco audience did-not-get-it.

In true Rubinoos style, they carried on, undaunted and unflinching. They were subsequently hand-picked by Elvis Costello to be the opening act for the Armed Forces tour of 1978. Their second album, BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD, yielded the Powerpop classic "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend".

Soon after, as the story often goes, record company and distributor foul-ups threw a spanner in the works, and the most deserving band from Berkeley were out on the streets, and for the most part left unpaid by the smarmy label. By this time, bassist Royse Ader had decided to leave the band, and was replaced by Al Chan, a monstrously gifted singer and bass player.

The road to follow was a bumpy one. They disbanded, then Rubin and Dunbar continued on with Warner Brothers, and then briefly with Epic. Over the years, the Rubinoos have issued previously unreleased rarities from their archives (Basement Tapes, Garage Sale), reunited and recorded new material (Paleophonic, Twist Pop Sin), and released a wonderful collection of covers (Crimes Against Music). Some thirty years after their debut album, they are no worse for the wear.

Now, your average Joe on the street may have never heard of The Rubinoos. Real Powerpop fans regard them as icons. And most of the rock stars that were trying to be taken seriously in the 70's are either long since forgotten, or if not, probably embarrassed at the red leather pants they were wearing.

So, you have to ask yourself this question -- what is the difference between a band that made it big and a band that didn't? It could be pure luck of the draw. In the case of The Rubinoos, I firmly believe that they refused to play the game, and held true to their particular art instead of re-fashioning their image to the flavor-of-the-month. And for that, they will have my undying respect.

If you've never heard their music, listen to Michael McCartney's show -- he's bound to give them a spin with great regularity, because he's in on the secret. The secret is that they are one of the greatest bands ever, and if you haven't discovered that yet, consider yourself lucky, because there's soooo much good stuff just waiting for you.

Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, keyboardist Susie Davis is the daughter of FM radio pioneer Norman Davis. Chino LaForge and Amy Hanaiali'i Interviews on The Time Machine

Stand-up comic Chino LaForge was a guest on The Time Machine. He returned to the islands after a stint on the comedy circuit in Los Angeles. In addition to his own stand-up act, Chino is also a member of The Comedy Hui and is the force behind a comedy workshop beginning November 2nd on Maui.

Returning as a guest to The Time Machine is singer-songwriter Amy Hanaiali'i who is on Maui to perform two shows at Stella Blues in Kihei. The photograph above is one of The Time Machine's favorite candid shots of Amy taken at a recording session with Hawaii's premiere producer and engineer Dave Tucciarone.

James Patrick Phelan Interview

Just another day in paradise on the FM dial with radio hosts Summer Blue, Daphne Matsumoto and Michael McCartney spinning tunes, old and new. Rocker James Patrick Phelan was a guest on The Time Machine last week. James has an EP titled "The Melody Tapes Part 1". The songs were recorded at Robbie Rist's Valley Hollah Studios in Woodland Hills, California. Robbie produced and engineered the music for the EP and there are another batch of songs on the way for "The Melody Tapes Part 2". James gave The Time Machine a chance at playing the songs the past few weeks on the air. James played rhythm guitar on the tracks featured on the broadcast along with Brian Forsythe (from KIX and Rhinobucket) on guitars, Roger Joseph Manning (Beck, Jellyfish, Imperial Drag, Moog Cookbook and TV Eyes) on keyboards and Moog synthesizers and Robbie Rist on six and twelve string basses plus drums. "The Melody Tapes Part 1" featuring the single "The Day After You" is available on iTunes (United States, Japan, Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom), Rhapsody and Shockhound in December.

This Maui afternoon FM aircheck with Summer, Daphne and Michael have the trio not only playing new material from James Patrick Phelan, but they also featured brand new songs from Robbie and Seth (the duo of Robbie Rist and Seth Gordon currently gigging around the country as the "Robbie and Seth Beg Forgiveness Tour"), the latest R. Rob Schneider and Bari Leigh Interviews on The Time Machine

Actor and comedian Rob Schneider was a guest on The Time Machine this past week. Rob was on Maui for a comedy concert in Lahaina at the Maui Celebrity Series hosted by Brian Evans. The Maui Celebrity Series is now up to eight performances. If you're a Maui resident or planning a future visit to Lahaina, make sure to check out the link below for the Maui Celebrity Series' upcoming live performances. Rob discussed his latest comedy album "Repeat Offender" and some of the tracks were featured on the broadcast. Radio host Michael McCartney taught Rob before the broadcast about a regional pidgin slang that Rob had never been aware of before. Rob's been to Hawaii a number of times during his life and was only familiar with the pidgin slang "Brah" often heard in short sentences like "Howzit Brah!". Michael wasn't sure if it was just a Maui slang but he shared "Shoots Brah!" with Rob who thought it was funny enough to incorporate into his concert act in front of the Hawaii audience. The Time Machine's Executive Producer Jenny Leong was convinced that Michael may have oversold it on the air but she couldn't stop laughing when Rob said it from stage several times. Rob Schneider owned the audience like a rock icon. If Rob comes to your town on his comedy tour be sure to see him.

Singer-songwriter Bari Leigh was also a guest on the program. Her debut EP is filled with strong songs that sound great blasting over the FM dial and make great car cruising music. Joining in the musical fun are collaborators Mike Ruekberg, Willie Wisely and John Fields who are no strangers to The Time Machine's playlist over the years along with Andy Thompson, Kristin Mooney and Chris Heinrich. Bari shared with the radio audience the various stories behind her catchy songs. Bari is an artist that is ready to share her craft with the world since she began writing songs at age seven in Darnestown, Maryland. As a teenager, she found her voice and her life’s passion. Bari’s music has been described as a slant of country, infused with pop and heartfelt soul.

In addition to Rob Schneider and Bari Leigh, brand new songs from Gary U.S. Bonds and Left On Red are also featured.
